I ordered 3 VCA's from them about 5 weeks ago. Hadn't heard anything since the initial email thanking me for my purchase so I decided to rifle off a email to see where it might be at. It bounced back. When to their web address and it's turned into a simple home page with their logo now.

Does anyone know whats up? Have you had any problems with your orders? I'm hoping their just going through a update.

i ordered from them a few months ago and got my parts in a couple of weeks in the mail with no problems.

hmm i hope they didn't fold without letting people know!

:?:

I too was getting worried, but I just got an email saying that he didn't have them in stock at the moment and would get them out to me as soon as re recieved his shipment. One other thing, my hotmail spam filter killed his addy. His domain or IP addy must be on a blacklist. Check your spam-box to see if you've been contacted.

Still, if I had known that I would have had to wait this long, I would have gotten them from one of the other sources.

I have to add my name to the list of those who have ordered THAT 2180s from Black Lion and had my order filled quickly. THAT was back in September. I'd have to say THAT I was satisfied.

well i guess modding the 3630 is up to us now... anyone know how to make the gate usable,
Last I read there was a mod taking ther gate out of the circuit and the sound really opened up. All you had to do was remove 2 jumper pins. I have yet to try it but seems like a good idea cause the gate never really worked correctly to begin with.
anyone know how to make the gate usable, and how to fix the time constants section ??? (appearantly has a resistors too small in value which cause the artifacting in the compression)
The capacitors C40 and C53 are the release time constants and do look to be a bit small at 0.47uF. I would say that doubling them to 1.0uF would be a good start, or even 2.2uF could be tried.

I'll see what I can find in the gate section.

The RMS detector should be scrapped and the design started anew, but that's not practical. :green:

The front end of the design is not much to my liking... it is dc coupled and there is a 150pF capacitor across the input jack. I say we strip the capacitors out of there (C12 and C30).

The input impedance is 100k... is there much to be gained by lowering that to reduce the noise contributed by the input resistor, or by switching it to a metal film component? (R12 and R54)

The power supply looks like this: Alesis 3630 Power Input

I think that can be improved as well.

We could start with replacing the 1N4001 diodes with UF4001 or FR102 fast recovery types.

The voltage regulators are 7815 and 7915 types. Any suggestions for good replacements? LDO upgrades? I did a quick look at the LT chips and did not find a direct drop-in for the 7815.

This is a voltage doubler power supply that is boosting the 9vac to a level sufficient to power the regulators. I don't much like that... a 12vac wallwart could drive LDO regulators without much trouble and allow us to do away with the doubler circuitry.

There is no reverse protection diode across the 7815... might be a good idea.

Thoughts?

feedback: make a splitter from the output, feed one on those into the sidechain, the other use as the output. voila! feedback. if their is an output gain then you can use that for effect.

The Black Lion guy posts here as Dr. Foster. Maybe he'll show up.

Just for the record, I received my THAT2180s from blacklion today. After no responses to my emails, I went ahead and ordered, received and built my SSL with 2151s from Verbos.

Now that I have 3 spare VCAs, I might need to build another one.

Any progress?

I'm very interested to know about results anyone's had regarding making the 3630 into something usable. Mine's gathering dust at the moment.

Thanks tons!! :green:
