There was an interview with a South African doctor on the national radio here in Ireland this afternoon , She was insistant all the scare mongering relating to 'Omicron' going on in this part or the world is utter bullshit , she said there simply not seeing anywhere near the numbers of deaths or serious illness from the new variant , she was cautious about the reasons for this ,but firmly pointed towards a weakening in the new variant .

I never cease to be amazed by the names people call the latest variant ,
Omicron , Omacron , Omnicron and Omnicon ,the latter might be closer to the real truth of the matter , a con job on a grand scale . Interested to hear any other misspellings in common usage also .

Incidently just because Im highly scepticle about whats going on does not mean Ive abandoned the basic precautions Ive used right from the start , facemasking in enclosed spaces ( which I did long before it was manditory) , maintaining good hand hygiene and avoiding large crowds of drunk people , I know several vaxed and boosted people in good health who let their guard down and guess what , they went down with a dose of Delta , and made a good recovery like the vast majority of people in good health would have had anyway . I strongly believe now that we shouldnt have been as greedy about trying to vax entire populations and made sure people in poorer places with poor health with bad living conditions got prioritised .

I won't speak for 57sputnik but I think he's referring to those that still have a bit of common sense. Just a guess..

At least now politicians are admitting it doesnt stop the spread just as many have been saying for a while now.. How can they not admit it since they're all catching Covid! Funny how that works.

I think it's fairly obvious now that this is nothing but a fear campaign at this point.

I am not as smart as you guys at predicting the future but I am watching for a massive expansion of at home testing to diagnose significant numbers of no/low symptom Omicron cases resulting in otherwise healthy people being asked to quarantine for 10 days. I can imagine this being pretty disruptive for small businesses already understaffed.

Of course people at high risk need to be careful. My brother and sister in law are currently waiting in self imposed quarantine JIC after flying to visit a relative in a different state with a compromised immune system (double lung transplant recipient). They are still waiting for the local clinic test result for a clean bill of health.

The first reported US death "with" Omicron had underlying health conditions. They mentioned that he was unvaccinated, but had contracted Covid and presumably survived an earlier variant once already. I scanned several reports about this death with zero information about his underlying health condition. A casual inspection of this report suggests that a) natural immunity does not protect against Omicron, and b) Omicron is more deadly that earlier variants. Plenty of people are saying "a", breakthrough Omicron cases are running rampant in all populations. So far nobody is claiming "b" yet, but that is inferred from the headlines.

I am almost more worried about the new expanded test program than the Omicron variant's actual health risk disrupting the economy. Of course I am not an expert, so think for yourselves. I wish they were instead expanding availability of mitigating treatments, including new ones pending FDA emergency approval. Maybe a "warp speed" program for covid treatments.

I keep reading your reports on athletes and adverse reactions/deaths to the vaccine. The music industry has a dirty little secret with the vaccine. On September 26, Judas Priest was playing the Louder Than Life festival in Louisville when guitarist Richie Faulkner – 41 years old – suffered a massive heart attack and almost died on stage. He had reconstructive heart surgery and now has 4 metal valves in his chest. Richie is a guy who was in top-notch health, had no history with drugs, but had to get vaccinated to go on tour with the band and to be able to play Live Nation venues. No one will admit the vaccine was the cause, because there’s no evidence to prove it, but those of us skeptical of the effects of getting jabbed have our theories. Given the nature of the far left leanings of the music and entertainment industry, we have to keep our thoughts to ourselves for fear of being blackballed. Not sure what you can do with this info, but I thought you might be interested to hear it.

Since the deaths lag new cases that graph could be worrisome, but it appears this variant is different (milder) this time, than previous waves.

Medical experts in South Africa are saying that Omicron may have passed its peak there and they are seeing a decline in new cases. If omicron follows a similar trajectory here we could be closer to the middle than beginning of this wave. We should note that it is summertime there and winter here, that will help a respiratory illness spread here. This begs the question does slowing the spread slow the ultimate decline.

We are close to emergency approval for oral anti-virals.

PS; For a fantastic hypothetical, if Covid was engineered by some intelligence to kill off the old and infirm among us, Omicron could be the built in self-destruct mechanism to end it. No, I do not actually believe this but it makes an interesting plot line for a sci-fi flick.

I don't know the answer but the question has merit. If we're to believe Covid is here to stay (I certainly do), everyone is going to be exposed or infected at some point.
