Transfomer questions - impedance

On my desk I have a sample of a Carnhill 600R:600R gapped output transformer (Looks just like a VTB1148).... If someone would like to try it out I would appreciate it....... Ideally a UK member.

[Not sure if it appropriate here as this is an output transformer and you seem to be discussing input transformers].

  why not just use an attenuator before the 600:10k tranny? If I wanted it to sound just like any other LA-2a, and didn't want the gain, that's what I'd do . . . .

but what will the effect using a 1:2 or 1:4 instead of a 1:1?. the gain at the output of the input transformer will decrease?
