i've seen this book referenced alot on this and other diy sites but the link is down and i cant find the book anywhere. most likely i will not get to a tube compressor project for a year or 2 or 3 or ... lots of projects "on deck" (american baseball reference). but i would like to get the book. i get the impression it is not available because of legalities. anyway if it is available somewhere or someone would like to sell their copy. please reply .thanks

The binder version is killer. Heavy paper, colored diagrams, detachable from the binder, but a pain for David to make.
He did it as a one off for some friends down in LA, but it got a little bigger than I think he wanted, so he put it on a CD.
I fell lucky to have the original. It is very cool.
Kind of a DIY collectors item.
Mistakes and all.

yep
... I don't have a real one but do know of the virtual book

perhaps cj could post a picture of the real thing on a table just so people can know what it is /was

It was a lot of work for Dave and did inspire many of us in the early days ... along with waltzing bear audio ( Alan Garren - hi Alan ) and the Pro Filing Cabinet

try to contact Dave
failing that - perhaps one of us could help
but it would be best to have Dave's permission

"Hello all,

Since many of you have used Dave's book to build an LA2, I wanted to sadly inform everyone of the unfortunate passing of the author of the "how to" book on building that classic compressor. Dave was a musician as well as an engineer. He started recording in Orange County and had many hits on the Christian as well as secular charts. He also recorded much of the music for "That thing you Do." For the last decade or so he worked as an engineer at ABC in Burbank. He was a father of three, a kind hearted guy, and a very talented electronic and audio engineer. Once involved in a project, his intensity and passion for it were truly unique. He will be missed.

Talked to him on the phone one time.
Vey nice chap.
Was gonna do a 670 thing with him.
but then the 6386...

That is a terrible shame. I spoke to him a couple of times and I have the book.

yep
I never talked
but
did exchange a few emails and he was supportive of turning Tech Talk into the DIY connection that I/we did.

That post of mine above with the Gearslutz link was yesterday arvo
and it's now sunrise and I should have left for the coast for a surf
but I just don't feel like it.

This news has really shaken me up, my stomach still feels tight.

Here's a link to a memorial .pdf: http://www.encinahighschool.com/class76/images/dj.pdf

He was just 19 days younger than me. Here's his obit:

JAHNSEN, David Reese
Apr 21, 1958-Jan 29, 2007
David was born in Sacramento, CA. He was predeceased by his mother Sue Ann Jahnsen. He graduated from Encina High School and joined the Marine Corps Band, where he played for Bob Hope, President Carter, and in the Rose Parade. He also learned to fly while at El Toro. David became a recording engineer whose notable works included "Butterfly Kisses" & the soundtrack for "That Thing You Do!" He worked with artists including Bill Baumgart, Bob Carlisle, Rick Elias, and 4Him and won several Promax Awards. His most recent work was in television for ABC. David loved to joke, to laugh and to make others happy, but he loved his children most of all. He was a cherished father, son, brother, uncle, nephew, husband, coworker, and friend. He is survived by his father and stepmother, Don and Annette Jahnsen; brothers Mark and Steven Jahnsen; sister Krista Bodily; stepbrother Michael Totaro; stepsister Deborah Totaro; half-sister Nicole Bauer; wife Beth Jahnsen, and his dear children Miles, Devin, and Cole. A viewing will be held at Forest Lawn Covina Hills on Sunday, Feb. 11, from 10:00 AM-2:00 PM, (800) 204-3131. After the viewing, a celebration of David's life will be held beginning at 3:30PM at The Loft, 5225 W. San Fernando in Los Angeles, CA. Memorial donations may be made to City of Hope or Lance Armstrong Foundation. Published in the Sacramento Bee on 2/7/2007.

Wow. 48. With his list, I thought he was much older that.
Accident? Cancer? Which one?

Doesn't matter. Don't pry. Move on. Grab the iron. Time is, apparently, getting shorter all the time.

Man thats a downer! I got his book years ago and still have it in a binder and pdf.

I had no idea he was so accomplished as a musician and audio engineer!

Cancer seems to be taking more and more around me these days. Just got the news that a guy I grew up with when I was a boy in Africa just died of lung cancer. My mother died because of it.

In any case and without any disrespect to Dave, if you want to build an LA2A I suggest using the PCB available here or check out Cayocosta's layout (I used it and can vouch it to be 100% correct).

But Dave's book was the thing that got me the confidence to even think I could build an LA2A.

F...K CANCER! All those 100 billions $ for Irack! Imagine how much research that would have funded!

Sorry for the rant...I get mad sometimes when I am sad.
