Hey Guys,

i wonder what's type of the foam which was used in microphones to damping tubes, like for example in U47 with VF14:

There were other types like in gefell microphones:

I need foam like this to some of my builds.

Any suggestions?

me to! i've searching long long.....nothing found about the foam

p.s. i have a idea! i call andreas grosser from germany on monday, i think he had an answer about the foam in old tube mics.

best

Not sure about foam, but i've seen silicone rings for tube damping, during some eBay searches. Or is it necessary for it to be foam? :)

It's closed cell sponge foam. Get a sheet with decent heat resistance.

The gefell ones are open cell, and maybe silicone (orange?)

It is necessary to be a foam :)

Silicone rings are little bit voodoo.
I am not looking for magical disappearing of vibrations :D

Foam rings have different purpose. When tube is mounted upside down foam stabilize it.
I need mostly piece of foam, not even a ring.
Mostly for subminiature tubes, which are directly soldered/without socket.

There's a problem to find any spec of the foams available on my local market.
Especially heat resistance.
I was thinking that maybe there's a type of foam with industrial standard name or type of material?!?

Btw. If someone needs original ring for U47, sennheiser sells it for only £62.18 :D

Yeah, the type of foam is closed or open-cell foam. For type of material, best heat resistance is silicone. The Neumann ones look like Polyurethane.

If you can't get anything locally, you could get something like this from ebay:
