I just wanted to drive the point home of thinking outside of normal operation and what is considered "good" in the name of experimentation and innovation.  This guys got the right idea.  I had an idea of building a plate reverb out of an old twin bed cot and piece of sheet metal.  I might actually try the cymbal idea though...

Sounds more like an over loaded mic to me.  My tube mic makes this exact sound if blown on directly.

Now that you mention it, yeah, im gonna +1 the dead battery in stomp box, OR, for consistency sake, some kind of variac that is starving the pedal (so they could do 40 takes and still get the same "sound")
