What choice of EQ for a first project ?

Hello!
I am a total newbie in electronics but I am willing to learn! I would like to begin a DIY project (an EQ is what I need the most). So I 'd like to know if you could advise me one that would be easy and affordable.
Can you explain a bit further how this all works (where to buy.. etc...)
