Hi Robert,

Welcome to "The Lab"!

Sorry, No ready-built units available.

This is a DIY-project, meaning that you will have to build it yourself. That's the whole idea.

GroupDIY is not a way of marketing cheaper-than-original rip-offs.

But if you're willing to invest some of your time, I'm sure we could talk you through building one!

To build a woorking SSL clone is not THAT hard.
For me the most time went into making the unit look like the original.
If you have to pay me for every hour I worked on it, the price of an SSL clone will be enormous. Maybe even more than buying a real SSL compressor.

For me the hardest part on building the GSSL was to etch the board as the traces are very tight on this one. But with Gustav producing professional boards i think the hardest part of this project is being taken care of.

You just need to order a pcb from Gustav, order the other parts and stuff the board. Ok there can be problems with the unit not working but we got so many helpful people here so i wouldn't worry to not be able to complete this project.

Oh and don't forget in this process you will learn many things which will give you the ability to build other stuff and maybe service your gear in the future. Yeah and it's fun :thumb: :green:

That's exactly why we're here...

That's the spirit Robert!! It really isn't too tough to build yourself. Plus, it's fun, and it's a good talking point in the studio. :guinness: :guinness: :guinness:

This is true. The stuff I've built for my studio gets talked about more during sessions than the API eqs I bought for 5x the price of the SSL clone.

totally. plus, people think you are a maniac! I did a session yesterday with this pretty exprienced guy whos played on a million rrecords and all he wanted to do was play through the stuff I built. "Yeah, theyve got all that shit over at X studio, lets patch in all the boxes without labels". Some people definitely get off on the uniqueness of the whole experience, and its usually people with tons of experience in other studios too.

Ask Radiance for a FPD file for his panel design if he used Frontpanel Express.

Good Luck !!!

I made the whole frontpanel design in photoshop.
I have a .jpg file for printing on Lazertran (it's in reverse).
I can put it on a server if anybody is interested in using it.

@Bocasound: I can sent you a sheet of Lazertran with printed on it two sets of the design for the front panel and a couple of SSL logo's to experiement with.
Just tell me when you are ready for it.

im very close to start up my own ssl project, but my head is filled with stupid questions....

my concern is the parts lists. one of the lists here is from usa and the other from australia. is there a european version, to get the power right or will they do?

-eero

The only difference would be the power transformer. For european voltages, you'll need a 230V:2x15V transformer, preferably a 10-20VA toroid type - that way you'll have some spare power for the meter light as well.
