My JLM 99's from Joe are boxed and just about to be wired, i seem stuck wondering which input transformers to purchase. I guess i'm looking for a clean type of sound i guess, for use with my vocals and acoustic guitar. I play western swing modern country type of stuff and play some Atkins style guitar picking. Lundahi seem rate highly around here i think they do the 1538 and 1538xl from memory? Which would you go for or any other make?

i have a 99v with lundhal 1538,and it sounds very clean and super smoth.
lots of gain and way quiet.
recorded lots of vocals with a beyer m500(rybon),wich has low output, and i never had to worry about noise.
others may tell you with dif.,tranny`s.don`t forget that joe has his own tranny`s.
as a matter of fact i`m gonna get 4 of those,for my neve`s 1272,along with 2 super power suply`s.
trust me:you can`t go wrong with jlm.
ps:don`t need to get 1538xl,because 1538 it`s just enough.
best regards
pedro

I built up a pair with 1538xl's and they are incredibly complimentary for the 99v opamp. I also tried joe's input transformer as well as an old reichenbach that I have kicking around, each is wildly different from each other, more in regards to where the midrange sits, the lundahl seems the widest sounding to me. I use that one the most.

I would not recommend Joe's input trafo for your application. Reasons: a) 1:4 ratio gives an unnecessy pushing forward of the midrange, b) It has more of a vintage vibe going for it, and while the highs and lows are more extended than the trafos it was modeled after I still wouldn't call it hi-fi like the lundahl.

Hey dave (soundguy),

I thought yours were with LL1578XLs? I seem to remember from the picture....

I'm planning on a pair of 99s soon-ish and have been wondering about this question myself. Curious if you have found any diff between the 1538 and 1578XLs.

Cheers Tom

Vicki,

hi there. I can't comment vv 99v/Lundahl, but i can ad my tuppence worth. i have just lashed together a few mic pre's with 2520's and a number of different trannies I've had lying around. Built like an API 312(ish) but with no output transformer. Firstly, I do not want much gain, as pre is for vocals,(with very hot Nuemann U48), kick drum, toms, gtr/bass cab, or DI, and I don't neeed to be balanced (short cable runs, and fwiw, my beloved, un-balanced Helioses rool!) I tried ex-Neve Belclere/Willesden 1:5+5 (using only 1 output winding), Marinair 31267 wired 1:2 using only one primary/one secondary ala JLM1272 . . Also tried Sowter 4652 600R:600R line transformer as parallel/series, and single:single. Every combination ROOLED - BIG TIME! I cannot say in a shoot-out, whether an individual tranny was better, since each required a different amount of gain from the op-amp, so who can say if the difference was solely the iron . . . anyhows, they all sound fan-tabulous, and I am no longer a subscriber to the belief that the sound is only in the Iron . . .All my buddies(un-prompted!) thought that the sound was that of an API (me too!). . . . even though NONE used API
(ie.Jensen / Profile / Cinemag) iron. Apart from the Sowter, all the iron was . . . . NEVE!
Basicly, I honestly believe that it is merely a personal choice, and that I don't think you can go too far wrong with ANY iron. The type of music you make really shouldn't dictate too much your final choice, unless you are recording purist, clinical, classical music. I struggle to accept that I prefer the (crap!)Belclere's best of all in the final analysis. My instinct in a shoot-out, is for the Marinair 31267, since it is cleaner, BUT - in da mix, the Belclere has a certain presence that is lacking with the technically "better" option. Just to add another curveball, I am passionately in love with my Helioses, which use unbelievably small, technically inferior, weedy little Beyer trannies. They are amongst the HUGEST pre's in my armoury . . . Sorry to say that, for once, size IS important . . . and that doesn't necessarily relate to either the weight or cost of transformers imho . . . OEP's are f@@kin' cool for peanuts btw . . . .

Perhaps I haven't helped, but I think you are thinking too hard about this. Beauty is, after all, in the eye of the beholder, and I can personally recommend the following - UTC, Triad, Sowter, Lundahl, Stevens + Billington, Marinair, Belclere, Willesden, OEP, Carnhill, St. Ives, Jensen, Cinemag, Op-Amp Labs, Profile, and these are just the few I have actually used, - I mean Actually USE daily . . . .

IMHO, you can't really go too far wrong!

All the best,

ok many thanks.
I think the 1538 might fit the bill, i'll order an odd one today and see if i can get one channel up and running for starters. To the guys who have built the jlm99 with Lundahi 1538, dual chip unit what value resistors did you use for R15 and R22?
Anyone have a Farnell or RS part number for the little front panel toggle switches, there seems to be loads of different functions in these small switches and trying not to order the wrong ones.
Many thanks for your help!

Do consider the OEP, its great on vocals Ive found, and never less than good on anything else. Weve also been playing more with two JLM 1:4s wired as 1:2, and really liking the results.

Remember that the loading you apply to whatever transformer you choose will have a dramatic effect on the sound.

Oh yeah, I love those little Beyers aswell! Fantastic on drums!

I will second mattmoogus recommendation of the OEP A262A3E.

At least for male vocals and acoustic guitar, my JLM99 with OEP A262A3E always finds a way of sitting right where I need it to in my mixes. Also, in my opinion, the JLM mic pre works well with Fums Shinybox 23 (w/Cinemag). A pretty awesome bang for the buck combo.

Best regards

Tom

Thanks again.
I ordered a Lundahl 1538 as a try out today, just have to get the 99's chips now.Did anyone try the 5534 to fire the preamp up first? I have space for two more preamps in the case so will try some different transformers in those perhaps with another chip set.

I think were spoiled with all these choices....

And i like it!

ps. Got my Carnhill output transformers yesterday, gonna be fun to try them out in my Bauman 1272 pre.

Thanks everyone of the great comments on the 99v :)

Hey dave (soundguy),

Yes I am fairly sure dave used LL1578XL from memory.

I will second mattmoogus recommendation of the OEP A262A3E
Yes this transformer is very under estimated.

I have tried the 99's with JT13k7, and it sounds very cool too.
Yes I would like to play with Jensen transformers more but they cost a arm and leg to get them out here. So I have never heard a 99v with one.
