Thanks, i've been admiring your builds as well, very inspirational.

Quick run down on racking, new hex fred diodes in psu, recapped amp modules and psu with spragues.  Only thing is the laser etching is not quite dark enough on front panel, but oh well.  I'm digging the mic/di switch, bass straight in sounds awesome.  Being a bassist i'm a bit picky.  Also Avalon U5 mic level out into the mic trannie is pretty rocking too.

Good use of those original panels.  I did something similar when racking some Collins 6Q-1's once.

I wanted to use the panels so as to leave a little homage to what is inside.

As or the machining and etching work, well the etching on that panel wasn't dark enough and the DLA2A they made 4 of the holes too big and lets just say other panels are unusable!! So i'm in the process of finding a new machine/panel shop.  Ask me in a few weeks when i've get some work back from the new guys.

hey Barney ..
Hope you're well, mate!

Does your TYPE 1 rack have the variable gain control (?) there applied to the output level?

Or is that control tapped in to the circuit somewhere (negative feedback adjustment or so?)
as suggested in another thread on here (which Chris at Linear started, also yonks ago).

I have just been looking into these modules again.

From memory, the other switches on your rack are the JLM 'Go-Between', with phantom/phase/input pad?

Cheers man!

PS. sad to see Dave Crittle's  ''RETROVOX''  site seems to be no longer, and instead there's a site for electronic dog fences business at

I hope I managed to save out the cool resources Dave had shared there.  That ABC broadcast equipment overview info doc was a good one, describing different amplifier types, and the overall system and signal flows etc
