Hey there folks, I have 2 c61s from about 1966 that have served me admirably over the last 10 years, however now one has started leaking ripple through which must be from the power supply. I’ve change the 15uf/75v with a cheap electrolytic 22/100v which seems to have solved the problem. However I’ve had a problem with these tiny electrolytic caps exploding and taking out the output transformer in a C28.

Thr original is an ero wet tantalum 15uf/75v The issue here is size vs high voltage, there are very few manufacturers that make a tiny cap with a high voltage and the c61 is super tiny the size can be no bigger than 12mm x 5mm or else it the mic body will not close

I’ve found one wet tantalum on mouser but it’s 85 quid! I’m just wondering if it’s worth it?! I really do not want to lose the o/p transformer from the c61 as it’s very obsolete.

So my question is does anyone know of such a tiny cap replacement? Should I just suck it up and pay the 80 quid, the mics are a pair so the other is sure to dry out soon, so I should really do both….

Any thoughts would be gratefully received

Tim

You could try going with a 10-12uF @ 80-100v. Odds are good you might not notice any difference; if anything, if those caps are aging, you might even get some bass back with new caps.

Filtered the 5mm diameter ones only, from the few (Japanese) brands i trust. You have even more options if , by some miracle, you can fit a 6mm diameter cap in there.
