I'm proud of you guys 8)

They actually look kinda funky in the raw state.

P.S. If anyone still does not know what chipboard is....watch cymatic's video.

Finally finished, my "main" nearfields:
a DIY copy of Audience's The One: http://www.audience-av.com/loudspeakers/index.html
Build with their original driver (Audience A3S) but without the original passive radiator, so I can use them easier with a sub in the near future...  here seen with their match made in heaven partner, the Davetone!

Eric!

What have you done to that poor little cone centre?

You'd better suck it out before it gets set, vacuum on soft setting might be best.

Other speakers look great

I thought it was supposed this way, since all of the pics in this thread seem to have the same issue, more or less) ;-)

Got issues with one of my Maplin speakers...dome was pressed in out the box so popped it out with a Hoover....couple of days later it was back in again! Can't get it to stay out (hence the photo!). My advice is check them when you purchase and any sign of the dome not sitting correctly get them swapped!

I didn't know there was a problem with the cones.

I guess you could suck them out then soak a little super glue on the creases to stop them going back in.

Maybe there should be a pinhole or something to allow the air in, there must be a vacuum formed when the cone goes forward.

thanks for a great project Dave !

I have been having problems getting a good mix with my old Videologic Scirrocc Spirits - so decided to build up some auratone clones after being inspired by your own, and after reading Mike Seniors Mixing Secrets for the Small Studio.

I think these together with my Senn 580s and 280s will help me get a better mix balance.

I happened to have some 3/4" chipboard lying around so I have used that for the boxes - adjusting my external dimensions slightly to keep near the interior volumes.

I screwed up slightly when cutting - so one dimension of my boxes is 1/4 longer than the other - so they aren't perfectly square - the are slightly rectangular cabinets now - but I don't think this will matter, and the extra thickness of the chipboard will help them with stiffness/dampening too i guess.

all the cutting done today - glueing tomorrow etc

thanks again

I know this is an old post but I found these speakers and they seem really close to the Maplin speakers

http://www.simplyspeakers.com/replacement-speaker-mid-bass-w-205-4s.html

they ship to the US and elsewhere

I would like to build a daveclone, but getting Maplin drivers to Argentina is impossible. Anybody has Driver substitute ideas?

I think the Maplin Speaker is somewhat similar to the old auratone ones, maybe a similar and more available driver can be used?

Thanks!!!

Here's another supplier and these are listed as 8 ohm:

Looking for a similar speaker in Australia. Going for this one.

That´s a full range driver isn´t it?

I need some help from the gurus here....what driver from this page www.madisound.com would you recomend me?
A friend of mine is traveling to the U.S. shortly and can bring a driver back to argentina.

Please help!!!!

Thanks!

Yes you're right, I didn't think it a problem as the Avantones are advertised as "full range" but I see now the original Auratones have low/mid drivers. Anyone want to comment on the advantages/disadvantages of using a full range speaker? I presume the extended highs undermine the purpose of focusing on the mids but obviously you still have the advantage of a closed portless design and no crossover. Might consider doing the Killatone version with the low pass filter for this speaker.

Hi Pablo this model has a suitable frequency range I think (100-10000Hz), don't know if could match somehow the frequency response of the original auratone driver. But maybe is close enough.

I'm planning on getting myself a pair and give em a try.

Thank you Dave!

I'd also like to know, if  the "Visaton WS 13 E - 8 OHM" Gilgamesh is suggesting would be suitable for this project. Is the full range driver an K.O.criteria?

You can't use the WS13E because it is not a fullrange speaker.

dryman: OK, thx.

Well, right now I think I´ll try and get one of the "original" Bose driver.

I thought the problem with the Visaton is that it IS a fullrange driver, whereas the original auratone and the maplin are low/mid speakers and thus roll off the highs sooner. In any case I can't get the Maplin so I am building with the Visaton when I have some time and will report back.

I have a set of Auratones. I'll have a look later, but if I recall correctly they are made from 1/2" particle board with a simulated wood grain vinyl covering. I'll open one and verify what the driver is.

I don't think the drivers are designed for LF woofer applications as they do reproduce HF quite well.  In fact, in conjunction with a sub to fill out the bottom end, I've had people comment on how well these little single driver boxes sound.
