I have some sympathy for that view but it depends where you draw the line. Bear in mind that the very first Microsoft Windows was released in 1985, the same year the X window system was released for Unix. Back in 1992 I would agree that most home users did not need to know about file types, let alone have the ability to change them. But now, nearly 40 years later is that still true? Computers are so all pervasive that the minimum average computer user's skill level must surely be a lot higher?It kinda makes sense because I suspect the majority of Windoze users are totally non-technical and wouldn't know what an EXE or DLL file is.
