So, I'm starting to look for a console, because i hate mixing in the box....

What would you choose if preamps were not of any concern...I want it solely for eq and levels.

I'm curious too!

Allthough a good summingbox looks like a better option, taken numberous recall in consideration.

I think on building 24 Calrec EQ's and a nice analogue 16 channel summingbox a la N*Eve.

Greg... I can't take your posts seriously with your new Avatar... I laugh
too much... not that mine is any better... but that surprised look on your
face, priceless :green:

when looking for a console there are several things that come to mind to look for

1. Features(# of i/o auxes,etc,etc,etc)
2.Size
3.price
4.condition
5.location

the most important is your budget. What good is the prefect console if one can not afford it. I'm shopping for one myself and it's not easy...
but all in time... :thumb:

yep, budget will help with recomendations,
But I just saw this the other day and I'm very curious about it:

and this: (looks even more interesting, price wise)

But a budget will gear the recomendations towards the direction that you want to go..

BR you gotta buy one after all JOhn Oram is the father of British EQ. who better to design a console then the guy who came up with British EQ. Which btw my american eq coms out next week... :green:

the dream is around 10K(us) for 16 channel. too pricey when you can get the toft audio smae type of trident for under 2000.00(us)

Quick comment on the Oram/Trident... I owned a Trident S100 mixer for a year or so. It was basically useless. Bad mic amps, bad EQ, bad summing buss. Oh yeah, it was noisy too. I'd really need to test drive another Oram product before I took the leap. Even the flagship 24buss consoles seem to have a sharte of problems:

Purple BEQ24

I still own my Oram MWS and think that it is pretty decent, so I am not one of the J.O. critics as a rule.

It's a tough call on price range, I'd like to keep it under 5K

I'm starting to think that since I just want eq and levels, I may just make my own.....5k could make some serious channel strips....

I forgot to add that I have a connection at Yamaha canada...

Toft Audio comes with a simmilar console as the last of the two Orams links....
I guess it's made in China hence the comments on the Oram website which I think are a display of very childish behavior.....

Maybe it was the Toft console that I was thinking of.

Yes, it was this one that I was originally thinking of. If I'm not mistaking, the 32ch version is going to be less than $4k and the 24ch less than $3k.
If it sounds good, its a good deal, but we will only know when we plug it in.

Ok... I was wrong, its a little over $4k for the 32Ch..

Maybe you can get into the pilot program (as in the link above) and post your thoughts here..

What are your thoughts on the Ghosts ? I teach on them on a regular basis and I don't think they are bad consoles at all. I'm pretty sure you can pick one up for under $5k.

Just a thought..

OMG, his website really looks horrible and those consoles

The Toft is probably going to be pretty good, but for 7K you can buy a Otari status 18R with totall recall these days.

yeah but are the otari's any good. I used to work on a concept's and man did it have problems. If you got any sort of static charge from walking on carpet and hit the board. Everything would reroute as it is a digital routing matrix. The analog side sounded good but pots went from noiseless to sctrachy in less then a year. Patchbay layout was retarded. I could go on. SO are the status's worth it?

A friend of mine has an Otari, and he said he likes it, except for the fact that the computer re-boots in the middle of mix for no apparant reason.

I know about that one too. way to go otari  :thumb:

I tried (unsuccessfully) to get a similar thread going in the brewery. I too am looking at consoles in the 6k range. Currently I'm leaning toward a Soundcraft Ghost or A&H GL3800. The problem with the GL3800 is that I don't need something that taylored to live sound.

no ghost. I know a few with those and they like it until they start using better mics and outboards and it quickly becomes the weakest link.

Any other suggestions for the price range? I need a board, so it might have to do until I get/build those hiqh quality outboard components. What do you think about an Allen and Heath?

Hello all. Have been reading around for about 2 weeks now, just thought I'd post. The Otari status in my 4 years experience with it was a nightmare to work on. The pres were hit or miss.....some would work normal others wont get any gain until 8/10's the way up. Patch bay is a little strange as one has mentioned, just more annoying then anything. EQ's usually worked well. It's the digital part of the board that was the pits. Sometimes buttons wouldnt work, or signal would cut out entirely during a mix with the only thing seeming to fix it would be to reboot the console. I recall rebooting it up to 3 times in a 6 hour session once. Iv also heard poor things on Soundcraft's in general. Some boards Iv heard to be decent in the lower range, you might wanna take a look at AMEK and old Sound Workshop consoles. Iv seen 32channel boards going for anywhere from 3k-6k.

EDIT - I also work sometimes currently on a D&R Triton 32channel console. Dont care at all for the pres but the EQ's usually suite me fine. I believe the guy got it for around 3-4k several years ago. Just throwing more things to look at to take in consideration.

Cheers.
