Another different doctor (they're everywhere) shared some positive news about omicron being somewhat protective against catching delta, but not the other way around... Many people who had delta still caught omicron.
===
While not exactly medical science the stock market seems OK with the increasing wave of omicron cases. The stock market is discounting some future expectation, so that good news is likely 6 months from now, but that is better than the gloom and doom, end of the world projections from the rising tide of new cases.

In the earlier stages of this I carried a KN95 style mask in a sealed plastic food container , I added a tissue with some drops of hand sanitiser (80proof Ethanol ) in the end , as well as handsanitising before putting the mask on or off . For a while then I used the standard medical spit mask , the kind dentists might wear and stored it in a small zip lock bag . In more recent times Ive swapped over to a tight fitting cloth tube , it definately seals much better around the edges than most masks as I wear a beard ,but mesh size might well allow some smaller particles through . I havnt suffered cold/flu symptoms in many years without the need for any vaccinations.

Its too early to take a victory lap but the new covid case numbers have sagged from the 1M on Monday, falling for the last few days in a row. I hope i didn't jinx it by writing about it.

It doesnt seem to have peaked here in Ireland yet , with 17,500 and 22,000 positive pcr tests in the previous two days ,but we also know the PCR testing facillities are maxed out and many are waiting 4-5 days even to get tested . One medical guy seemed to think the real number of cases is around double what the lab reports are showing . Hospitalisations have doubled to around 900 cases on a given day relative to a time we had 500 positive cases a day with previous variants . Close contact rules are causing around 20% of the hospital staff to need to stay home increasing the work load on the rest . There are public health ads on the radio pleading with people to only access emergency services such as ambulance if absolutely nessesary ,theres no guarantee of a hospital bed and the ambulance ends up stuck in the car park unable to transfer the patient and not available for hours in some cases.

The graphs below give a better picture of whats going on .

The news media is talking about a new covid variant, but apparently it isn't exactly new, just recently found in CA (Originally detected in France as coming from Africa).

I remain optimistic, but that's how I roll.

“We’re not going to eradicate this, we’ve only done that with smallpox, we’re not going to eliminate that, that only happens with mass vaccination programs like with measles…but we will ultimately control it,” -Dr. Fauci

Saying something like that was a conspiracy theory a month or so back. We'll control it as much as as cold/flu.

I am repeating myself but I am still encouraged that far UVc LED technology may happen in my lifetime. The short wavelength UVc kills microbes but doesn't harm humans making it useful to disinfect public spaces. Hasn't happened yet... old school normal UVc has to be used when humans are not present.

Another promising technology is therapeutics. The government appears fixated on vaccines but coronaviruses like to evolve too quickly. Effective use of widely available therapeutics can nip infections in the bud, reducing hospitalizations and excess deaths. Of course testing and availability remains a challenge.

I am optimistic that we may still learn something from this pandemic to better prepare us for the next one... there will always be a next one.

Government messaging is starting to talk about wearing N95 masks for protection.

For years they discouraged consumers from buying and using these so they would be available for healthcare workers.

I watched price and availability from Amazon, and the good news is they are now available to order (for years they were restricted to only healthcare customers), but prices are probably starting to creep up.

I don't wear my N95s when shopping or visiting the post office because they restrict my air flow, uncomfortably.

I wore my N99 when vacuuming the other day... else they have not shown to work (observably) against virus.
If sick people wear them (by choice) that seems reasonable. If scared people feel more comfortable wearing one, less reasonable but I can appreciate the idea of filtration.

N95 are the better masks for particulate filtering, perhaps avoid the N95 masks with exhaust valves that allow you to spread your virus shedding to others. KN95 (Chinese) are supposed to be the same as N95 but YMMV.
when vacuuming the other day...
I use hepa filter level vacuum cleaner bags in my cleaner, so presumably leave the air cleaner too.

Mask wearing has become politicized since early in the pandemic. This is independent of their efficacy which is complicated.
If sick people wear them (by choice) that seems reasonable.
The purpose of surgical (spit) masks is to protect patients from doctor's or medical staff's exhaled emissions.
If scared people feel more comfortable wearing one, less reasonable but I can appreciate the idea of filtration.
Remarkably I see people wearing masks while driving alone inside their cars, and one local guy wears a mask while riding his bike outdoors. Of course in cold weather the mask is warmer. About the only time it isn't less comfortable.

I wear a mask while cycling (usually fast). Keeps insects out of the mouth and nostrils.

I heard one opinion shared that slowing the spread of Omicron with masks, etc. before everyone gets it, might be counter productive if it allows some more dangerous covid variant to evolve.

I haven't started licking door knobs.

Thankfully, viruses 'typically' become more contagious and less deadly. Of course there's exceptions but it seems like Covid has taken the less deadly path. Unless of course the usmidtermelectioncron strain of Covid will somehow defy all science and become the most deadly virus ever.

Funny how everything that was a 'conspiracy theory' turns out to be true.

I am watching China right now, apparently omicron just hit, or they are just admitting it.

The winter Olympics are scheduled to begin there in only a few weeks. Even if they licked doorknobs Omicron wouldn't run it's course quickly enough to subside before the games. We'll see how effective strict shut downs work against omicron.

=====
I generally avoid watching local news but watched last night's show for the weather report, I'm making sawdust and CO2 in my yard for a while (two large trees to cut up and burn) so rain tonight is not helpful. The local news reported that hospital emergency rooms are slammed, apparently a lot of people trying to get tested for covid. Not ICUs, but emergency rooms.

I remain optimistic about everything but human common sense.

JR

UK is relaxing covid restrictions while US government is talking about mailing n95 masks to citizens.

UK is perhaps a few weeks ahead of US wrt omicron variant spread.

Always the optimist I feel like the near future will get better here at least.

Dunno if my posts from almost two years ago are in this thread or another. I’ll have to search “crunchy bat ramen” or “BE AFRAID!!!”. What a pathetic time it was here!

I walked away from the Brewery, and GDIY because of the pandemic pansy attitude of fellow members. I didn’t peek since because I knew what each side was preaching.
Almost two years have shown what is going on.
I got CoV Christmas 2019, all the acute symptoms. Back then it was “the flu”. I spent the week in bed taking home chicken broth and a handful of vitties each day. Gone in a week.
Going forward, in 2021, my naturopathic doctor recommended a prophylaxis dosage every six months of [FDA un-approved, off-patent, human anti-parasitic medication] and vitamins C, D3, Zn, baby aspirin. I got two courses of [ ] based on my body weight from Rite Aid over the passage of 2021, and did so.
Company Christmas party 2021- a co-worker said in the morning he was sick and would not go to the luncheon- go home and get better, dude! The boss gave him two shots of single malt and said “you gotta go!”. He felt better and decided, yes.
In hindsight, he dosed four of us with CoV at the luncheon, great time!, including the boss’s wife. I went symptom-free to Christmas eve service in the choir and sang for joy. . .
Woke up Christmas morning like a truck ran me over. Home CoV test was positive, so I immediately started a daily prophylaxis dose of [ ], procured from a friend in Ecuador, with supplements and had three hours outside bundled in the fresh air and sun with my face, eyes, and hands exposed.
Next afternoon all of the acute symptoms were gone.
BS on everything from the western governments and media conglomeration.
Hundreds of thousands if not millions of people have died unnecessarily because of the gov-media-medical complex.
My boss did not isolate from his infected wife at home and got it. He would not take [ ] if I brought it to him because he read in the NYT that [ ] is horse medicine and poison. So, he followed his doctor’s advice “rest at home and go to the hospital if you can’t breathe” and did so until he could not breathe.
He died on a vent, 20 EFFING MONTHS since people started dying on vents in hospital from this scamdemic.
This is a total absolute scamdemic from early spring 2020.
Good luck folks!, the Greek alphabet is long.
Mike

Glad to see you back, sodderboy your diy electronics contributions are most valued, many good members have walked away in the last few years...you could say the media divisiveness is effective...sorry for your loss.

Glad to hear from you sodderboy. Sorry to hear about your loss. I’m also a believer in these other medicines to try when dealing with Covid. Ivermectin and such are being reformulated by drug companies as a treatment with their patents unavailable on ivermectin. These past 2 years will be looked at as the equivalent of McCarthism In the years to come. Dark period of secular religious beliefs in a modern world with out traditional religious beliefs. God help us.
