UK newspapers are full of the story that a huge cyber attack is expected as Russian retaliation against the recent air strikes in Syria. Maybe time to switch to Linux?

If the "Russians" do attack it will more likely be DDos'ing larger servers, ie ISP's and corperations.
The induvidual user is unlikely to be attacked,and if you have a decent properly configured firewall, (ie Cisco/Mikrotik etc)  and AV you should be safe,
It really has no consequence on what OS you have, most good firewalls are linux based anyway.
This Russia stuff is just more government properganda IMHO and getting very tired of hearing the same old
"It was the Russians" rhetoric.
Cyber attacks are happening all the time, nothing new here.....some are attacks internal to the same country !

Depends on the nature of the attack. DDOS has been the 'tradtiional' attack but who is to say it will be the same? 9/11 caught everyone by surprise.

I run linux nowadays just because of many reasons least of which is Russians attacking however, I suppose they're just another example of the many, that having a decent locked down system can deter. Losers out there will aim to steal and use anything against you for the sake of either simple(evil) vandalism or to get cash. I don't underestimate anything. I absolutely think it does matter which OS you run as they have many ways of gaining entrance into a system through ports that are common used for browsing etc. Linux/Unix file systems security are your only defense after that. Windows is targeted worldwide. As well, call me paranoid, but there are third party 'affiliates' that for varying reasons have contractual access with microsoft, for collecting information on microsoft systems...which Linux, being open sourced does not allow...or limits.

- I got 'soft' for a while using Microsoft and I shouldn't have...as my system was hacked into not long ago from south Korea/Vietnam. It was a huge undertaking to change all passwords, resoftware, file complaints to authorities, etc. Now that everything is back more or less to normal, Linux is on everything, behind the router. Staying off of social media and limiting personal information is always a good idea as well.

I don't know about new cyber attacks, but their disinformation industry is in full swing.

The claims about shooting down "most of" (71 of 103?) the missiles fired at Syrian poison gas military targets, seems hard to believe.

A few years back I had a stand-up agument with a corporate purchasing department who insisted on buying a significant number of windows-based servers and end-user devices- they wanted to buy the cheapest they could get.  I advised them that whatever the price from the vendor they have to at least double it, probably nearer to triple it, to get the total cost of ownership for 'protection' over a 5 -year period. 

They could not get their heads around the point that if you buy commodity-based equipment, you have to accept that the tools and skills to attack it are also commodity items.  Therefore the additional equipment, people, skills and tools needed to protect it go way beyond the capital purchase price.  If I remember correctly, the  5 year TCO,  just for protection, came in at about 3.5x .

The disinformation industry is active on both sides of the fence.
I would like to see "real" journalism from the media sources and evidence, however media journalists just seem to read from,
And quote pre written government scripts, to ensure the public gets to hear what it wants them to hear.
True challenging journalism is dead, you can  predict  what the mainstreem media will say, to get the appropiate public response.
We are all edgeing  closer to orwells dystopia, unchallenging and coersed by big brother media.

Governments are clumsy and adopt new tech slowly. In this case it plays to everyone's benefit.

It's the real people I'm worried about, using uncontrollable social media. It's rare to see a day when there isn't some social media storm happening. Because of the broken phone without human interaction people become enraged instead of just being mildly irritated. Media absolutely loves the fact people are enraged. They feed off of it.

The psychological effects on the society remains to be seen. It will not be pretty. It's an uncontrolled experiment still and since it's purely driven by market forces it will not go away anytime soon.

I'm no longer reading news paper comment sections. I have started to tune out even this Brewery. It used to be so civilized but these trends are making people incredibly polarized.

First, Cambridge Analytica was hired to make war more acceptable.

Now, an enemy has been found.

Besides, the Russians are quite capable of bringing down the entire internet, using the latest backdoors in Cisco routers.

The timing of all of this is interesting. The backdoors were discoverd only two weeks ago. Cisco issued a patch. More than half of the net's core routers still aren't patched.

Did the CIA really expect that nobody would notice they had these backdoors in Cisco routers? Do they fear losing control over their propaganda machine?

Russian govt has been very busy blocking ip's. Millions of them. Preparing for war? Or business as usual?

Sorry guys but I'd love to see more serious approach when we start to discuss which govt propaganda we are under, how deep our IT knowlege level (speaking of IT), and how deep our knowlege in chemistry when we speak about "Novichok", WADA etc.  8)

Alived traitors poisoned with combat poison "Novichok", and govt poisoning his own nation seems hard to belive too. But it's the casus belly for goverments "without propaganda". Let's better take some lessons from Israel - they kill their enemies everywhere (Mossad), and bomb their enemies without any red lines and provocation (in Syria too).

Sorry for being obvious and possible personal attack but when newspapers write about cyber attack they doesn't mean that Russians will attack Ian from Norfolk PC, so no need to switch to Linux for you. Let's suppose it was a joke from you.
Next. Speaking about Russians (or Chinese, Americans) in "cyber world" is more bold statement even in comparison with Solsbery story.
I speak about "higly likely" style in discussing complex things, and manner to switch from WWIII to comedy in threads dedicated to Trump etc.
Please my apologies for being too straight, I hope we all understand, when we pronounce something wrong, as it happens in electronics, preamp schematics discussion etc. Specialists will see mistakes at once in schematics, advanced will see better solutions etc.
Politics is nearly the same things but a bit more painfully, badly, because we speak about our motherland and our people. I hope you understand. And when you said about linux after "Russian cyber attack".... Just leave Russians alone and let's discuss it if it will still be interesting for you.

No problem. I only mentioned Russians because it was what the newspapers said and they were only reporting what the government had said.

People may be fighting elsewhere in the world but I have no intention of fighting here. It is warm, calm and peaceful - just the way I like it.

Wow!! someone stole around 700lbs of explosives Monday......ATF offering reward...... I had to call my brother....He's one county over from where it happened....
Too bad the company who had it stolen wasn't directly tied to the topics of the day that the reporting media deems most important....(AOL..1).Starbucks....2)Pruitt's travel to Disneyland...3)Trump wanting his name in history books....).....I can't find it as any major headline....it is true though..................Oh well....must be no big deal........
