Can imagine that some are fully happy with passive DI's on bass while others can't live with it.
Since at least we need to specify what kind of bass it's about. Like for most sources the differences can be pretty big.

In case of bass (let's for convenience assume electric bass), do we have (#1) some blues bass player who still has the first set of strings on the Fender he bought in 1969 ? Or (#2) some hyper-active guy that likes to swap strings after each two takes and if he was allowed to would actually prefer to re-fresh-cone the full-on tweeters in his bass-cab after ten takes as well ?

While I don't qualify as either of these two extremes, personally I'm not too happy with passive DI directly after bass either.

That's pretty irrelevant actually, since it's just another preference, but passives certainly take away transients etc. While that may not matter at all for #1, it certainly will change the sound for #2.

Cheers,

 Peter

Good point. I must say, however, that in my years as an engineer I've met and worked with many bassists and not once has one had desire to change strings! You'd be hard-pressed to find a bassist that likes new strings. Also never heard of anyone wanting to change a tweeter! I presume that by both of those comments, you are talking about high-end in bass. you don't really need to worry about that since bass DI never really has anything over 4-5k anyway.

That tweeter was fully in jest of course, but the stringchanging I read about once... Anthony Jackson IIRC, changing strings for each take ? That's of course extreme as well.
But OK, he's in 'certain territory' already (> 4 strings for bass etc, so where do you stop...  ;) )

It ends somewhere, but not there yet I'd say. As an illustration, the crossover frequency of for example one of those bass-cabs with tweeter is at 5kHz I saw (SWR Goliath III cabs)
I happen to use Goliath II's myself and while I add just a little, there's sure something added that I'd hate to loose. Must say that I do like fresh strings (4 of em, not more) & play with a pick, but please don't consider me in the AJ-camp, as it's completely different music.

Long story short, it won't matter much for most players, but examples where the diference between passive & active DI's can become noticable aren't that extreme.

Bye,

 Peter

I just built a Jensen based DI for my telecaster and jazz bass.
I also have some active ones I built and bought.

The Fender preamp stage one I did is probably my favourite colored active DI.

The Jensen is my new benchmark for DI awesomeness - absolutely no noise at all.
Just great, pure sound. I use it with stacked single coil pickups.

For additional color, I put it into the mic input of a variety of diy builds.
The parallel out is great for feeding pedal chains and a second passive DI into my desk.

No more active DIs in any of my new builds.

I am going to try a Sowter also. They are pretty good buying at current exchange rates.

what do you mean by "additional color"? what would you do if you didn't want additional color?
