Thanks,
I'm thinking I'll go for the pre trimmed version (2180)
Just looking around for transformers I found this http://www.airlinktransformers.com/transformer/0015215-open-style-toroidal-transformer-with-leads.asp
will this be right for uk mains?

Thanks

The 2180 is just a pretrimmed version of the 2181.  you'll still need to make some resistor changes.
see here: http://diy.fischerworks.com/gssl_vca.shtml
Thanks for the pointer on that, you probably saved me some haedaches. the mods look straight forward.
what are your thoughts on that transformer?
http://www.airlinktransformers.com/transformer/0015215-open-style-toroidal-transformer-with-leads.asp

also I was thinking, is it easy enough to use Jack ins and outs instead of XLR's?

I'm not sure what the minimum power requirement is offhand for a gssl, but the transformer I normally use is 25VA.  That one might be ok, but you might want to find one with a little more power.  Better to have extra power than not enough.  But the primary and secondary voltages on that trafo are good.

Yeah, I've built them with 1/4" jacks before - no problem.

excellent ill order that one tonight.
thanks for the heads up guys.

for the jacks is it just a case of buying different sockets? no need to modify any of the internal workings?

Exactly. Why modify anything? It's just 0V/+/-. Connector doesn't make any difference.

thanks again, sorry for such basic questions.
you will no doubt see more of me in here when my parts arrive (if this postal strike lets up)

i have been using the waves SSL plug in for some time now and I am blown away by the results, of course the real thing would have been better, and when i was looking I stumbled up on DIY.
already thinking about a Pultec EQ after this.
It makes sense really as I like to master my own material.

hes got a few more, outlining panasonic or nichicon caps

not sure where i got them

pm me if you want them

Hi all
been measuring the pcb according to the schemo, and everything except the voltages at the 5534:s at the vca main shows correct voltages.
At the mentioned 534:s it´s +/- 15v instead of the +/- 12v the schemo says. Any ideas? Is it ok?
best
Leffe

on gregs BOM the capacitors are panasonic monolithic, can i use any brand of monolithic ones? or are the panasonic ones better and will it affect the sound in any way?

Thanks

Ok and won't matter in this case. In this DBX202 emulation circuit its only a buffer for the scaled down control voltage from 50mV/dB, as used by the DBX202 down to 6.1mV/dB for the DBX2150/That218x.

thanks Peat!

I have the same question as Autophase!! I am trying to order just from Mouser, because I already have some of the other parts on the BOM. Mouser stock AVX ones....anyone tried these??

Mac.

pretty sure any ceramic will be fine, mouser have Xicon ceramics as well I think

dont overlook Jakobs BOM, hes the guy who designed the thing!!

GSSL with Expat Turbo board and CRC. Sounds great, and its quiet as a mouse. Thanks to Keith and David for making these available.

Yeah, but there is no further info on which ceramics are good to have as higher quality of if it makes much difference.

Hey Chrome Heart - congrats, nice build. ;)

I was just looking at the CRC you tube vid. Did you do any sound recordings, or take measurements of the noise floor before and after this mod? I was keen to see if I should plan to include the CRC board from the outset, or just build it and have a listen first.

Mac.

Before putting in the CRC board, I would hear definite noise if I had the monitors cranked and no audio passing through. If I pulled the unit out of the chain it would go away. Now if I do the same check and I hear no noise. Not a sophisticated test, but it sure made a difference.
I would suggest to go ahead and put it in. Im going to retrofit the other two units I have as well.

Here's my latest one...
New feature of 10dB or 20dB meter scaling!
I'm a terrible photographer...blurry and bad lighting.
Vintage dakaware knobs and an old Simpson meter.
As always, blue LED's added to the meter.

Chromeheart, have you tried adding decoupling caps to your GSSL's?
I put mono ceramic .1uF decoupling caps in parallel to all the filter caps, and from every opamp power rail to ground on the back of the pcb ala Jim Williams.  I don't have any issues with noise at all, even when cranked in a test situation.

Nice build regularjohn. I like the retro look you have going on. Which Simpson meters are those? I might have to do one myself. ;) I have not put the bypass caps in any of my ssl builds. But I have put them in my 200B Soundcraft, along with the Tangible ground mod and it has made a very noticable difference. It didnt dawn on me to incorporate that into the comp. Id like to see a fuzzy photo if you have one ;D.
