GSSL HELP THREAD!!!

Hi Guy's!
Excuse my very wet behind the ears ness here!

Can anyone recommend or supply me with a BOM for England For the Gssl?
I tried some of the others but struggled with a lot of the parts with most of the usual suspects as far as suppliers go over here (farnell, r.s etc)

I think I bought everything from Farnell except the PCBs (Gustav + Expat Audio), DBX 202C (nos black market), Sifam meter (Canford), 12 way switch for HPF board (eBay) and case (Parusha). If you build the 2180 substitute circuit you don't need the 202C, and the 12 way switch is only for the super sidechain.

I could send you my order history, but not all of it was for GSSL so you'd still have to do some detective work.

What are you having trouble sourcing?

I dont have a BOM but could get you close...

I ended up with Rapid electronics for quite a lot of my stuff - I'll dig out the order details and paste onto a note later
some bits and bobs from Maplins - knobs/illuminated switches


THAT2180s from Profusion uk - you can order just 3 but they aren't cheap.

couple of orders i placed with Rapid below ....you'll need to wade through and check off from your GSSL list - I duplicated a lot of stuff to build a second and HPF sidechain too.

I had trouble sourcing pcb connectors and ribbon cables ( 5 way, 3-way and 10-way ) but got them from ESR electronics in Newcastle i think .
Turned pin sockets you can get from online robot hobby suppliers pretty cheaply ( as well as odd metal resistor values )

Hi! i'm new here and just built my first gssl, got some problems with it though, it doesn't work (yet)

- I used a regular 1mA meter, it doesn't respond to anything
- compression is not working (turning attack, ratio, treshold, release don't make any difference)
- when the release lorlin in turned all the way to the right, i get a subtle distotion and a hum, all other setting don't

Make up gain works just fine and all audio that goes thru it is crisp and clear for that matter.

Any help at all would be much appreciated...

did you make sure you did the small jumper on the control pcb ?

many people had sam symtoms by leaving this out

These are just passive CR filters.  So you should be able to disconnect them from the main board at point C and D. You should be able to test them stand alone by connecting a (low frequency) pulse generator at point C and monitor the output at point D with a scope (no need for power on the main board for this test).

You could also try injecting a small negative DC control voltage (via a 100K resistor) into point D on the main board instead of the connection to the output of the filter, to make sure your VCA is not the source of the distortion, although that's unlikely if your make up gain is working correctly.

Have you inserted all the wire links on the switching board? Have you inserted the tantalum electrolytic caps in the correct orientation (+ve pin towards ground, because the control signal is -ve wrt ground)? Have you also checked whether the two caps on the CW setting are in parallel with the correct resistor? (they were marked incorrectly on my board => u47 should be in parallel with 760K & 6u8 in parallel with 91K)

both the schematic pdf at gyraf and my board say that 750k is next to (parallel) 6.8u and u47 is next to 91k.. so that's the way i soldered it...  where does it say that has to be swtiched then?

still got 6.8u next to 750 and 91k next to 47u though.

you can take the make-up gain out when switching to bypass by using a second pole on the bypass switch (use 2x6 or 3x4 if you want a bypass LED). That cuts the added voltage that comes off the wiper of the 50K make-up gain pot to the control voltage going to the VCA's. This is point "E" on the schematic...

Now you've got me confused.

The  original board schematic has the 6u8 in parallel with the 750K and the .47U in parallel with the 91K. Whereas the redrawn schematic has them the other way around. I guess the original must be correct, which means I've got to check my builds.....

There are many builds of the NE5534 op amp.
Trying the search option of the forum doesn't bring me to any shoot-out of the brands and types.
It's my first DIY project so hopefully it's not a dumb question to ask for the best NE5534 or substitute to go for. Between the brands and types things like slew rate and operation temperature differ.

I think you are over thinking this one.  The NE5534AP and NE5532AP worked well for me.  If you wanna know which one sounds best just put sockets in and buy different brands of op amps and decide for yourself, (thats the fun part anyway ) they aren't that expensive so you have nothing to lose
