If only two mics... ?

Ahhh, yes, Thanks for your input K Brown...As I said, it came so cheaply I never checked...Now I have: It is a Hypercardioid capsule, which pleases me greatly (vs. Omni, as originally described, which would have been okay also...). To quote from a reliable source:

"The KM 185 is a hypercardioid FET pencil condenser. It is the newest addition to the “Series 180” microphones, which includes the well-known KM 184 cardioid and KM 183 omni microphones.

The capsule in the KM 185 is Neumann’s model K 50, developed in 1988. Is a pressure-gradient transducer with a gold-sputtered Mylar diaphragm. Internally, the K 50 capsule is identical to Neumann’s AK 50 capsule."

There we go!...but I still wonder if I have to seal (tape over) the CAD machining originally designed for their cardioid capsule????...

Blessings
No, not neccessary to cover the vents on the mic body; the vents on that hyper capsule are behind the solid plastic plate you see in the back of the capsule, so the mic body's vents will have no effect.

Very Good and thank you again! I should have thought of that ("Chemo Brain"). I'll mod the Cmc5-style circuit board as I have done many times before (audio grade electrolytics, wima bypass caps, genuine toshiba fet, better 1 Gig resistors) and give it a whirl. I should have some audio clips in a couple weeks....it will be interesting...

I landed on a Neumann 3rd gen K50 (Omni) capsule I plan to put in a modified CAD GXL 1200 (Typical Schoeps CMC5 transformerless cuircuit)
Not to spoil your party, but are you sure the capsule center pin will interface correctly with the GXL1200? Or is that part of the GXL1200 mods you did?

ALSO, I had forgotten about these omni mics I've had for quite some time...Dayton Audio 'EMM6". about $50.00 each and you can check the serial # with a Freq response...quite flat from 20-20KHz...not bad in a pinch for ambient recovery...
Again, not to spoil your party, but the EMM6 is a measurement microphone and not optimized for low noise. SNR is rated at only 70 dB A-weighted (i.e. 24 dB-A self noise) which according to Neumann standards would be unworthy for a studio microphone. Also, the specified max SPL of only 127 dB @ 1% THD is easily beaten by many SDCs. Though I'm not a big fan of its electronics, the Behringer B-5 easily beats the EMM6 in all aspects and can be found for less than €50 on ebay. Its omni capsule is highly rated, though I cannot attest that from personal experience.

Thanks Jan,
As I said, the EMM6 is okay 'in a pinch'. A "measurement mic" is just flat with no particular, but usually loved, "presence"...A bit noisy, yes...I would never use them for a classical quiet recording, but they've had their uses...I think the Beringers are essentially the same mic, but not gonna argue about it.

It was just an afterthought...I've used them on rare occasions and they've been useful despite their given deficiencies...

Thanks for the input.
Blessings
