Hi, I got a couple of quotes so far.

red knob  moulding - £2380
1000 at 44p each.

skirt moulding - £1060
1000 at 33p each.

brass insert tbc

__

Another quote I got:

" Tooling costs for the Knob and clear skirt is £2350.00 with slides for the holes.
We can make tooling and drill holes for £0.10 per hole. Tooling this way is £1950.00.
Moulding costs are £0.15 for knob and £0.10 for skirt. (Minimum qty 1000 each or £60.00 set up charge applies)

We could make the brass part from a hard plastic.(glass filled nylon)
Tooling for this is £1550.00. Part cost £0.15 (un-tapped) £0.35 (holes tapped)."

__

I am waiting for someone else to get back to me also.

Hey, those are decent prices.

So, the first option would be about:
£4.21 | $7.02 | €4.81  each (+ price of brass insert & set screws)

The second options would be:
£2.30 | $3.83 | €2.63  each (+ price of brass insert & set screws)
£4.20 | $7.00 | €4.80  each (includes plastic insert/no set screws)

I think we should try to stick to a brass insert for quality purposes.
Also, it would be great to somehow have the moulds owned by GroupDIY as a community instead of an individual.
The first batch of 1000 look like they're going to be very affordable, but the next batches will be cheap (no tooling costs)!

API was awarded a design patent, which would prevent a commercial company from using the API knobs in their concentric configuration ONLY.
Hey Skylar,

I think API were awarded a trademark, not a design patent.
Cheers, Jeff

Oh, yes you're right. I forgot they had the *trademark*.

RE: Marconi knobs
A patent couldn't be awarded, because even if it was retroactively awarded at the date of first use, it would be instantly expired.
Besides, the patent would be awarded to Marconi.

So, to get a trademark, Neve or BAE would have to prove that within the pro audio industry, their products can be identified by knobs alone in consumers' minds.
The fact is, when you see these knobs, you could be looking at a Neve unit OR a BAE unit. The knobs alone don't identify the product.

The Prices look really good.

Great work onlymeeee,

Thanks

My 1084 project is coming along quite nice and whoever will be making these 1084s as well may want some too. So yeah! Bring them on.

Jim

I am in too.
Still not understood well the prices and differences between options 1 and 2.
And.. what about the other knob in first post?
Or is this indeed the option 2?

1000 is not a little number.. I think we should list the number of knobs we want for this first run.
The 2nd run of course will be more nice  :)

The mouldings owned collectively by the forum is a great idea.
But then, someone should have them, materially, or am I wrong?
If its so, my vote is for Skylar having the mouldings.
