We have seen that 3-way vote split play out before and the expectation is that he would siphon votes from his former party. Since he is polling at something like 15%-20% vs President Biden if he were to keep a major fraction of those votes, it could be a bad day for democrats in the general election.
So far he has announced that he is going to announce in about a week.... This could be a negotiation with the democratic party power brokers who are changing the rules on him, or just payback.
We are still more than year away from the actual vote, so a lot of things can and will change. It is getting late for new candidates to get on state ballots.
