I have a JH 16 that will  not go into Play when the play button is pushed.  I can manually jumper the wires on the back of the switch and it works fine.  This would seem to be a bad switch issue but what I'm uncertain of is that it will still  not play even when the remote is plugged in too.  I doubt that both switches are bad.  If the deck switch is bad and the remote switch is good, shouldn't it play when the remote switch is used?  Or will one bad switch prevent the other one from working?

I'm also trying to rule out whether it may be something else downstream in the logic circuits.  Any trouble shooting suggestions?

Also, the play switch had been working fine previously.

First things first. If you can jumper the back of the switch and it works, then change that switch. You may have two separate faults. Treat it as that, until you can say that it is for sure.
On some machines there was serial wiring through the remote, normally the stop button. But then you would have had to put a jumper plug in when not using the remote.

Thanks for the heads up on the different switch wiring practices.  MCI seemed to have a lot of revisions that didn't make it to official manuals.
