Monitor controller accuracy

Hi,
I' think this is the best forum for this type of question.
Since I started using a reel to reel (Studer A807) for coloring my music I realized there is a big difference in what I hear in the digital and analog domain. I used to listen to tapes attached to my converters (Metric halo 2882) after 2 conversions. Now I wan't a straight signal from the tape machine to the same speakers. Of course I need a Monitor controller. But the price of pro ones are crazy here...
How does the cheap monitor selector color the sound? in comparison to my converters?
I found the Realistic mixer (32-1100a), which is what I really want in case of features. Is it really so bad in terms of quality I can't use it? of course it's not balanced I/O, but can I mod it?

Have a look at passive monitor switchers. You probably don't need balanced outputs and you probably don't need a mixer

I have a TC electronic level pilot and it was a good solution for straight DA to speaker controller, but now I want to switch sources.
Now I'm trying the Studer A779, but it colors the sound a lot...

If you like the TC pilot why not just build a switch box to use with it to select different sources?

Here in the US Broadcast Tools make reasonably priced relay based switchers. I would look at companies that make broadcast utility equipment if you want an off the shelf solution.

Velleman makes a little switcher PCB which looks good. I haven't used it but Wayne Kirkwood did and gave it a thumbs up.

The answer to your problem may be a simple DPDT switch placed before your TC Pilot. What is it that you find necessary in this Realistic mixer?

I guess WK was just interested in the control part, which is pretty nice . I reread what he wrote.

Suitable low level relays would be a drop in replacement or you could use the logic to control externally mounted relays.
