picked up a couple more mics today at Banjo Mart (at cost! :D)

AT3035 and AT4040. Haven't messed with them enough yet to have an opinion, but I did open them up.

Diaphragm is smallish in both of these, 25mm maybe?

4040 is transformerless, 3035 is transformer balanced.

Anyone have opinions on these?

AT4040 is an excellent allrouder mic, the diaphrams in all the 40' range are excellent. In the right hands, can mimic the U87, alot of ppl say its a bit middy but what they really mean is that its not scooped like all the other Nuemann clones.

Do an A/B test with any Rode mic etc and you'll throw them all out especially as the AT 40 range is very cheap now! I bought an AT 4033a and its a cut above the rest. I tell ppl who listen to my tracks its a U87 and they say yeah of course...those german mics blah blah blah. If only they knew! I've seen them new on Ebay for $150 USD!

flatpicker: Not really 'cost' I guess, but what Banjo Mart sells it for minus any markup which goes to commission for the employees or whatever :p

The 4040 was $230 (normally $299), 3035 was $135 (normally $199).

FWIW I have a pair of 4050's and have used the 4033s.... They are great mics. I find them to be very natural sounding, and have quite a different character than the neumann mics. I can't really quantify the difference though as I haven't A/B'd them... The capsules on the AT mics are also a bit different from the usual. I've got a bit of patent info on the AT capsule design somewhere... If people are interested I can post it.

I've been speaking the praises of the 4041 SDC mic forever. Those are SUPERB overhead drum and acoustic guitar mics, as well as general percussion and such. They are super cool sounding.

You know, I wonder if the 4050 or 4033 (for single pattern) capsules would be good in the G7. I hadn't considered that. Those are great sounding mics as well. Does anyone know anything about those capsules? Who makes them, and where I mean.

the 4050 is quite a bit more expensive than the 4040, MF price for example is $599 for the 4050 vs $299 for the 4040.

I agree, for a multipattern mic that sounds great, it's hard to beat the 4050 in this price range.

Here's a link to one of the AT capsule patents.

True, but if you stole the capsule from a 4033 at $150 bucks...it might be cool. It would be nice to have a multi-pattern design, but if you can get a nice capsule for $150, and possibly steal the mesh grille from the 4033 as well, it might be a good buy. I'd be curious to compare it with a peluso capsule. I can live with a cardioid only mic if sounds better than the alternatives.

That Blue lolipop style capsule that you can buy for $400 looks nice too. Sure it's a lot of money, but it looks like you get the capsule and the lolipop style mesh gaurd as well. It sure would make the whole process a little easier.

I haven't heard the 4040, so I can't really say much about it. I wonder if it's the same capsule as well?
the 4050 is quite a bit more expensive than the 4040, MF price for example is $599 for the 4050 vs $299 for the 4040.
I?m guessing it?s because of the 4050?s capsule which AT describes as "2-micron-thick, vapor-deposited gold diaphragms? and something about a ?five-step aging process?. Doesn't say that about the 4040. AT seems to be pretty vague with capsule specs. Doesn't even give the size. Looks like the 4050 and 4060 use the same capsule.
link is not working.. Do you have a patent number?
Same here... linky no worky.
Is this patent for the 2-micron diaphragm one?

I have two 4033s and have looking in a friends 404 to maybe mod. Modding makes no sense to me.

ATs yuk. I don't understand the ATs and mca 1 and MXL990 and sampson C01 type side address with a capsule in the 20mm size area with a baffle ring. To much cavity ringing sounds like crap like the GT 33s and 44s.

weird... the link works for me. The patent number is JP,2000-106699,A

go here
http://www19.ipdl.ncipi.go.jp/PA1/cgi-bin/PA1INIT?1105183444764

and search for atudio technica, It'll come up on one of the later search pages. If for some reason that link dosen't work, the japanese patent homepage is www.jpo.go.jp/

Gus -

haha I just read your post about how you dont like the sound of the AT's "sounds like crap like the GT 33s". I just got back from buying a GT33 :)

I got a GT33 and AT MB4000C for $80 :p
