Can anyone recommend a good printer, laser or inkjet where the ink or toner is not that expensive to refill. We do print a lot but mainly in b&w but do need it for photos too. Errrr why did the old one have to stop working!!!!!

Kinda leaning toward this one.

A Brother inkjet all-in-one has been working fine here, ink costs low.

I use to have an H-P Office Jet which wouldn't die and hardly ever need ink. Finally died.

Problem is that by the time you own a printer long enough to know reliability and costs, they discontinue it. When the OfficeJet quit, I looked for a similar machine but H-P had totally re-engineered all their Jets a couple times, not comparable, and probably not improvements.

FWIW: Brother MFC-J825DW is an OK draft printer, copier (without PC intervention), and scanner. For fine pornography with rich color I use a Lexmark Laser which is otherwise detestable (jammy, thirsty, costly, also so obscure there is no point giving the model).

I share your quest... small low volume computer printers have taken the "sell them a cheap razor, but rape them on the blades" con to new highs. HP used to be a respectable test equipment company but are now printer ink whores. (actually I think they spun off their PC business, or maybe the printers?)

I will keep the brothers brand in mind, but miss the good old days (dot matrix).

PS: I even tried to outsmart the dry ink cartridge "no printing today" debacle , by keeping a spare set of cartridges in the drawer, but the last time, the brand new spare was dry too..

That's why I go with laser printers - the ink is *supposed to be dry*.  Also toner carts last longer, ink doesn't run if you get it wet, much faster print time, better solid blacks, etc.

100% this!

I have Canon MG5350 which does a very respectable job of printing (for a cheap printer) but the regularity at which the ink needs to be replaced takes the piss!
