Hi.

Picked up an old NTP 179-100 compressor today.
Quite cool in the double width size with meter!
Havent seen this NTP model before.

My biggest problem is that someone ripped out the connector on the back and all the cables are hanging loose.

Does anyone have any info on this model??
Pin out and/or schematic would be cool!

Jacob maybe??

Regards,
Dennis

Here is a picture of the NTP 179-100.
I guess it must be quite early.

Here is a pic of the inside:

Also, when i opened it up, this note fell out!!!

Jakob, i guess you recognize the language
So, case closed with the pinout.

But if someone finds the schematic i would love a copy!

Dennis

Ok, so maybe a larger version of the -120 with transformers and VU meter?
Cool!
I will try to double check the circuit with the -120 schematic to see if they are alike.

This place is corrupting me....... I looked at the photos and felt excited!! I gotta go out .......

I am going to hook it up today, will let you know what i think about it.

I am so excited...and i just cant hide it...!

are those bright green caps original ?

Yup.. 10uF ERO polyesters. There's a reason why these units sounds sooo transparent, components were not chosen for economy.. :)

I have some yellow caps, like the one next to the ERO - does anybody have any info on those?

Thanks..!

thanks Jakob

such a fascinating colour considering the vintage
or is just the digital camera that gave it the florescent look

Hi again.

Just tried to hook it up but i smoked a resistor!!
I think i got the polarity of the power wrong.
I guess the note in the compressor wasnt there to help

Jakob, do you know if these run on negative or positive voltage??

Dennis

I haven't seen NTP's running on anything other than +/-12 or +24. Those were the DR (Danish national radio) standards, to which NTP built most of their stuff..

Jakob E.

Ok, that would make sence then.
But according to the note that was in the compressor, +24v is going to ground (like some UK modules).
Is this wrong??

Dennis

Yes, I think it's wrong!! Always check polarisation of any in-circuit transistor (taking into account npn/pnp) to verify supply polarity !!!!!!!!!! :!:

If you're lucky, the unit is protected against wrong polarisation by diode/resistor - if you're unlucky, the unit is toast now...

Jakob E.

Hi Jakob.

Hmm, after further inspection i think i hooked it up right anyway.
The +24v goes to the + side of the electrolytics, so it should be right i think.
It just looked like a ground connection on the circuit board, with a rail along the whole of one side.
But i checked my power supply, and i had close to +28 volts unloaded, which should be ok, but maybe toasted this resistor.
Then again, the resistor maybe was bad, or there could be a short somewhere else in the circuit.

My main problem now is to know what the value of the resistor is!
It was heaveliy toasted and i realy cant make out the color bands anymore.
It is the resistor in the middle of the big green and smaller yellow cap, roughly in the middle of the fold out circuit board in me previous picture.
Looks like brown, something, black, but i am not sure.

Regards,
Dennis

Impossible to tell without knowing function. Could be a safety resistor, if it's connected from supply+ to a large electrolytic-to-ground, and then onwards to various consuming circuits. In that case, I'd guess a 100R - maybe a 10R. Look at alternative (old) NTP schematics for an idea about how they were designing - that might help..
