There're also those small surface mount transistors (BC817-25/BC807-25). Are there any thru-hole sustitutes and are there any specific recomendations for those transistors?

Part numbers as they were on my original circuit from memory.
Q1 = BC546
Q2 = BD139
Q3 = BC556
Q4 = BD140

Q1 & Q2 could be replaced with one darlington TIP121, TIP122 or BD681.
Q3 & Q4 could be replaced with one darlington TIP126 or BD682.

What circuit are you referring to?
