And who's going to refund your wasted time in debugging a circuit which doesn't work as expected due to a sub-standard part ?

Debuging a fake Opamp would take me 3-4 mins at the most , ............If Smoke is liberated,..Then,..Money returned.
I report it to said vendor, who has a very good "track record"
Said chip vendor then removes product from sale.
If it passes audio then a quick comparison with a "Known good genuine article" will confirm .

Having the appropriate test equipment helps

Wishful thinking in the real world, how refreshing.  ::)

Please don't come here trying to get the 'warm and fuzzies' before you take the leap and then try to convince everyone you're doing the right thing.  8)

To save a few shiny duckets ain't worth the time wasted, period.

With that said, do what you want. My time is money maybe not so much for you.

Regards,
Mark

i've got ten's of them from my local store, all bad (most of them) :-X. I'ts run VERY hot! it has "malaysia" stamp at the bottom side.

Yeah I bought these from ebay recently and they turned out to be fake.  The Chinese man Harry kept lying to me about how they must have got 'hurt' during transport when I told him I tested them.  He wanted me to send them back so he could test them and then refund me once he had done that.  It ended up costing me money on postage returns and a lot of time.  It's not worth buying OPA2604's rebadged 5532's from ebay, just go to a TI reseller.  I hate lying scaming Aholes polluting the electronics world!

Seriously: is there really a benefit to buying current-production devices from anyone other than one of the standard distributors?

From what I read here and elsewhere, the answer is a resounding "no."

If you are running a production then of course you would not get near an e-bay seller let alone a Chinese one. But as I said this is diy. You try a few and they are crap. You bin them. What's the deal? May be I am a geek but it is half of the fun. UK/US is full of surplus electronic component sellers. It is also possible for a Chinese seller to obtain surplus stuff.

My biggest ever purchase from a Chinese e-bay supplier was around 5,000 Blue LED. The guy was actually in Hong Kong and said he would go to the factory in the mainland on that particular week and post them to me. And he did. There was not a single one faulty. I still have a big drawer full of them. It was again almost quarter of the price then the UK suppliers.

Even though I have my own, I have recently bought a few LM317-337 based dual psu modules from a Chinese supplier as they were very cheap. They were £9.00 a module including shipping.  They are damn high quality stuff and performed just as good.
