Another phpBB forum I visit just installed Spelling Cow.

http://www.spellingcow.com/

It adds a spell-check to the forum post compose-window.

It is free for forum operators and users (it has Google-ads around the spell-check window).

They "aim to raise the quality of on-line posting with our totally FREE service!"

In short tests (using some jargon-ridden text I've posted here) it does very well, very quickly. IMHO, brilliant.

I cant think of one village idiot that coul dhave benefitted from a spelling cow, but luckily that **** wasnt around so we got to see the un-adjusted brain power of that turd.

Spell cow is beat detective and auto tune for writing... Makes the average idiot appear half competent.

I should note that SpellCow can be (and for this place, really must be) a User Option. You don't have to use it.

But:

The forum administrator (or helper) can set up a site-dictionary with all the wacky words we use here, so it does not flag common jargon. "Amek" "Comp" "Schem" etc. I think he can set suggested replacements. "pre"="preamp" would make it much easier for new members to understand. Tradenames could have suggested obfuscations to avoid infringement.

Each user can open a SpellCow account and enter their own favorite odd-words. "dunt" "stinkin" "dunno" "tawkin" "neether", etc. That way you can type faster, yet be sure your favorite odd-wurds are posted consistently, so others do not have to struggle to read your point.

It can make it much easier, and faster, to read-thru hasty or inexperienced typing to get the writer's technical competence/idiocy.

Or everyone could just switch to Macs and use Apple's Safari browser which has spell check built into it. Not that I use it very much :)

I hear ya guys. It looks like a great service and the only part that I don't like about it is that it requires an outbound connection via port 80. Relatively low security risk, but still a risk. I have to act in the best interest of security.

If it is really necessary, I'll be on the look out for a server side "add-on." Or perhaps even code one from scratch if necessary.

Thanks,
Ethan

Understood. I'm wasting the day away with inet worms in professors' PCs. You don't want your boss's machine exposed.

Rediculous. Not a wise use of your time.

It would be cool if you could selective turn off the spelling correciton for certain registered users.

that would be pretty cool.
