I found the CMOQ-2S to make everything thinner and brighter, with a dulling out of focus quality. The SS circuits I removed it from had far more current drive than a BA-2, and they sounded far better without it. The BA-2 will fare worse. I tend to like transformers....old ones with lots of inductance!

Bummer! Sounds so different than what others describe. It must be a sensitive unit. Since I don’t yet know enough about what attributes of a transformer cause/present difficulties on the preceding output stage, I’ll ask.. what is a good affordable line out transformer that the output stage of a BA-2 can handle?
What about this Jensen?

I’d like to order one of something I can test installed at the tail end of the passive filtering. Forget splitting, just want something that will wholesomely pass signal that I can then direct either to the mixer or to the direct out. I know I technically don’t NEED a transformer in this spot, but it’s a nicety.

Ah, now i get it.
Well, my original plan was to use a DPDT switch to choose between direct out or mix bus, and just hang the VU right there too. But after adding this passive filter, i decided I wanted to still keep a balanced output for direct out so thus I wasn’t buy a line transformer for each. Then i figured, why not get a splitter of similar cost since I’m already going to get a 1:1, and try some routing stuff. But i see now that if I continue sending signal to the mixer while also using the direct out, it may just be too much for the preamp output.
Exact;ly,
I guess I’ll give it a go and compare. I wonder what the apparent sufferings will sound like or look like? Loss of high end?
I think you have reached the point where you need to stop drawing and start soldering :)

You will probably lose level, lose headroom and increase distortion (all caused by the increased load on the tube). You may also lose some low frequency response. Loss of high end is less likely.

Cheers

Ian
