I was actually in the console business back then. SSL was successful "despite" their sound. The convenience of their full automation was compelling to users back then. Methinks you are drawing the wrong lesson from their success.
I don't take pleasure from bad mouthing a major console company. The science link is about them cleaning up their earlier designs, No doubt in response to user complaints.

Having only been looking at this group for a few weeks, two things are very clear. There are without doubt some really good folks who respect the views of all members and help constructivly where they can, and there are others who are frequently dismissive and disparaging, often throwing in spiteful and patronising remarks. I'm not entirely sure what they hope to gain.
I for one am now reluctant to upload any of my schematics given how some other contributers have been treated.

SSL is the raeason bui studios have so many outboard preamps. We have a G+ in very good condition but sonically it’s whatever. Our two 9000Js have muuuuch better sonics. I spend a considerable amount of time cleaning switches (96 channels x 1 million switches and knobs per channel). Nothing fails, but they do get crunchy from not enough exercise.
The new SSL stuff is pristine and clean, but mostly unrepairable and tend to have short support lifespans. Hopefully SSL survives their newest incarnation!

A lot of that listed, and often the classic SSL sound, is electrolytic 4k era SSL The DC coupled superanalogue stuff was not adopted (or often liked) as much.
I used to have an X-rack loaded with 4k era black EQs and the superanalougue silver EQs. They were.... different. For sure the silver was cleaner, but not always the right choice for the material.

I like SSL EQ and dynamics, but never understood the appeal of cloning their pres..
It's a shame because SMT gets a bad rap, but done right is just as repairable as through hole.
Telling someone they're wrong is not a ad hominem.

All of this over some real non sense. At the end of the day, most folks listening to the content produced by these consoles and modern electronics don’t care. Know why? Because they are listening to digitally scaled replicas of the original works on their phones. While phones sound good, they are certainly not audiophile grade.
