Greetings all, after a bunch of research and forum ???
I found out my PT's core card has a bad SMD. The real truth is, a fellow friend tried to reseat the card and broke off R35 SMD resistor the value is 9k89 ohms.
First question is, could I put in a regular type resistor?
If not, do you have to have a certain type of soldering gun to put one in.
The resistor from mouser is like $1.
So, in panic mode I was I contacted a digi certified repair place. I asked what it would cost for them to put this one R in. F??King $200-$400 for that one SMD. And I no for a fact it's the only thing wrong with it. So what do you guys think? Can I do it with my regular solder iron? Can I use a regular type R? Or can someone help a fellow DIY'r out and not charge me a shitload of cash that I really don't have. Please feel free to let me no if I'm F??K'd or what should I do.
Thanks all...
Myke

proper way to solder it on is using a hot air reflow station (hot air melts the solder, costs $60 or more for the "gun" which is called a station.  It is fun and pretty easy.  Look on youtube for video.)

But if it is only one SMD resistor, then soldering it on with a fine tip is easy enough.  Clean off the old solder.  Melt a light dab of solder on the board pad. put some flux on top.  Plop down the piece and with a toothpick holding it down melt one side then the other.. if you are gentle both sides.  You may not even need the toothpick surface tension centers the piece with hot air.

Anyway be aware there are different size SMD parts, so read the spec and look online for the sizes.  Don't worry SMD parts are cheap and only the very big ones wont fit on the really little ones.  But the right size parts make it easy.

PS: I don't know what a PT Core Card is but if you are working on something digital with a cpu and memory then wear a ground strap and possibly use an antistatic mat... or touch something grounded before starting at least... or at the very minimum don't do the work on a dry day in a wool sweater after walking across a rug in leather shoes... :D

PT core card = pro tools core card. The core card is the minimum required card for use with pro tools to have a pro tools HD system.

Is the card pci or pcie?

Take a deep breath! You can fix this, but not if you're in panic mode... you need steady hands for SMD rework, that means go easy on the coffee too!

Dropping a tonne of cash on a hot air rework station to fix one resistor is way overkill. Hot air is handy for replacing ICs with a hundred and one tiny pins, but you don't need it for a resistor!

You can do this nice and easy if you've got a fine tipped soldering iron. Clean up the pads, and as bruce0 says, tin one pad, guide the part on (i usually use tweezers rather than a toothpick), solder that end then solder the other. No problem!

Regarding the resistor itself, you're better off finding the correct size SMD resistor. Using a through hole part on the same pads can put a lot more mechanical strain on the copper, and makes it very easy to damage the PCB... a larger resistor will act as a much bigger lever and rip those tracks straight off!

Best of luck, and welcome to the wonderful world of SMD! :)

Thanks my friends, i'm going for it. I really can"t WASTE the cash that I really don't have.
Hopefully I can find the right one,it calls for a 9.89 Ohms, but mouser only has  9.88 Ohms,
will that make a difference? And is anyone making a mouser order anytime soon that could add one to there order?
The part costs like $0.30, and shipping is $6.95. That's really stupid shipping cost on 1 Risistor..
Thanks everyone for all your help and response's, its greatly appreciated.

You mean 9.89k? Or whatever?

But 9.88k is a standard value. Where did you come up with the 9.89k?

That's about the cheapest it can be, given that it's gotta be pulled from a reel and cut, and then it goes into a shipping package.

Every time somebody at work needs a simple part overnight from Mouser or DigiKey, the call goes out: "overnight order! What do you all need?"
