Hello there. I'm new to this forum and have been snooping around for a while collecting tips while I can for quite some time. Thanks to all of you!
Anyways, I have a Shure sm57 Unidyne III.  Someone in my studio twisted the wind screen , and the one of the coils snapped. I went into the mic, stripped a copper speaker wire cable, and threaded it around the very small copper cable, and conected it to tye pole that became disconnected . Should this work? I plugged it in and the microphone responds to a light tap, but I can't talk or sing into it and get a line level. I really miss this mic and I am super bummed. What do y'all think ?
Thanks!

Snap a good picture of what was broken and how you fixed it and we'll take a look. Be careful with the wires, they're really thin!

I've repaired mine just a week ago.
It's all about solid connections of the wires. There's no more stuff that can go wrong in there, since there's no other components!

Make sure you have good connection at both wires coming from capsule. If they broke, strip some at the end with sanding paper, then connect a piece of new wire to it. When you solder it, when it's still hot, cover it with mic's yellow tape you have around the head base and press it. You need to have it flat, not to allow breaking the solder when you assemble the head to the rest of the body. Test every step with continuity on your DMM. You should have nice continuity (beep tone) on your capsule wires.
Now make sure your wires are connected to the small pcb with nut on the bottom of the head. Check with DMM again.
Finally, make sure you assemble the rubber insert correctly and put it all back together. Before you screw back the body of your mic (part with xformer and connector), check for continuity between outer pins of the pcb. And make sure you have your ground wire connected correctly to the pcb (mid pin) on head part, and also to xformer and connector.

I'm so sorry I didn't take pics of my repair. Never thought it would come in handy...

Good luck.

And do post some pics!

Here's a quick pic. I've been away from the underworld for a minute but here's what I did. I made sure to peel back some tape so you can see.

Looks a bit blurry. It's hard to take photos of such small details.

What kind of wire have you used to extend the wires from the capsule? Is it insulated?
If it's not pvc insulated, it may come in contact with the body of the mic when you assemble it, and that may cause problems in sound you're experiencing.
