Is there a possibility this migth be a bad meter or is there any suggestion on how to solve this issue?

Possibly.  R142 is current limiting resistor for meter backlight, what value resistor do you have here?  Sounds like you have a dead short from your description.

Mike from Hairball was kind to trust me and send a new meter. We received it yesterday. It indeed was the meter that was faulty, now we hooked it up in the same way and both meter and light work!

I will re-calibrate the meter and then it will be done !

Finished building my SB4000. Nice kit, thanks for making it so easy. I appreciated some of the little things, like enough space around the mount holes to allow for a washer so the nut wasn't digging into the PCB. Said to me that a lot of thought went into the design.

Everything is working well and the unit is calibrated and compresses as I would expect, except for one goofy problem. The bypass does not work, or more accurately, when bypassed, no sound goes through. I would expect just the opposite if there is an issue with the relays. 9.9 volts appear at the diodes on the 4 relays when the unit is engaged and I can hear them switching, and 0v when bypassed. When bypassed, I have 0 ohms between input and output xlr leads, so the connection is being made for the hard bypass. I do not have anything connected to the ext sidechain Checking to see if anyone has any ideas before I pull out the PCB.

UPDATE:

Was only relying on VU bargraph for conformation of signal being present. Changed setup to monitor actual audio, and bypass works just fine. Clearly, I/O VU bargraph is not showing signal while in bypass. In thinking about it for a bit, of course signal is not present in the circuit while in bypass as it is passed directly to the output connector, so, unable to measure signal with VU bargraph. Signal is no longer going through circuit.

OK, that's a wrap.

One very easy, well thought out kit. Many thanks Mike for making it happen.

Hi,

Just wondering if any of you guys can help me. I'm building the sb4000 and I don't have a clue how to insert the ribbon cable into the ribbon cable 20 pin headers with strain relief. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Rich

So you are saying that one might, stick the cable into the plastic harness, making sure that the cable is sitting in the correct grooves and then slowly tighten the vice on either side of the plastic connector?

ok Im wiring the transformer now but i have no clue as to how wire it to the iec, i have the transformer listed on the bom and im in the uk so i need 230v. whats neutral and whats live? i lost the datasheet :(

ok can anyone tell me if this is right,  I join the purple and the gray together, then the blue becomes the live and the brown is the neutral for 230 v operation ??  :)

Romplex,
Run a wire from the "L" tab of the IEC inlet (assuming you are using a fused IEC)to the bottom tab of your power switch (this is assuming you are using an SPDT) then you connect the blue lead from the transformer to the middle tab of the power switch. Throw some shrink tube on the unused (top) tab of the switch.
Make sense?

Dave

ok thanks guys,  thanks Wave i worked that out already ;) gonna set to tonight should be up and running this weekend!! wooo! :)

Hi guys, ok i just wired it all up today, followed the manual, testing the power at each board as i went along, then i started to do the testing with the 1khz tone, but the compression meter is not moving at all, only jumps a wee bit when you turn the unit on, and also seems like the threshhold and gain knobs don't do anything, it doesn't sound like its compressing at all :(

i dont know where to begin to start fault finding.

if you hear click switch should be ok
did you check ic in right position? if it ok you need some help more experienced

I solved the problem i had with the meter and knobs, the ribbon cable was on backwards doh!!

I have begun the testing procedures, im trying to set the cv levels but the voltages im getting at tp 8 and tp 10 are tiny,i cant get enough adjustment on the vr 7 and 8 to set them right.
