you could just populate half of the the SSL board, but you might as well do the whole thing!
as far as a wall wart is concerned, we have to generate a negative voltage as well as a positive one. although it can be done with an AC output wallwart, it's much easier to just do it with an internal transformer.
download the schematics and take a good look at them. the SSL compressor isn't hard to build at all!
there are plenty of full lists of vendors for the parts too. just search for it!
