I can't wait for M7 capsule.
I tried K47flat and K47V, they are great!
I hope Ari make K89 capsule...
the k89 has a weird plate. each plate has 2 pieces, both aluminum, and they're anodized at the point where they press fit. It seems finicky. I don't think this chinese machine shop is willing to do something that annoying. I'd probably have to get it done in the US or something. I am not against this, would just have to find someone willing.

I'd love to undertake a long slow PITA (as no PCB I'm aware of) build of a stereo mic for drums FOK, a la C24 or SM2 (or both!) Might either of these capsules (CK12 or KM56) be a viable option after M7? I'd especially love to see you venture into small or medium sized diaphragms like the KM56 or similar offshoots assuming there's a market to support it. A kid can dream...

Yeah, a CK12 would be amazing, especially since it seems like the version Guosheng was promising might be vaporware at this point. The only others available are from two Australian builders, and they’re pricey (suspiciously, the same price - someone should write about the great CK12 price-fixing conspiracy)!

No, its definelty happening, told me last week, prolly by november. The design is supposedly finished but they were going to move facilities or something.

I would love for that to be true. I also had a very similar conversation with him almost a year ago. Last Dec/Jan, he was getting delivery of new machinery to build the backplates. Not sure what happened.

They were trying to modernize the manufacturing method, by eliminating need for spacer, wich apparently they have solved now. Shure will be interesting..

Each time I've asked over the last 3 or so years the launch date has just gotten further and further into the future. It got to the point that I left Groupdiy and pro audio entirely for a while and when I came back I was worried that I'd missed out on the fun of the launch--the situation was the same lol. He quoted me an extremely reasonable planned price, so I really hope he does end up finishing this project.

While we’re dreaming…

I’d second the nickel-diaphragm small capsules, and maybe a reskinning service if that goes well. Sure would solve a lot of problems for vintage mic owners….

And f it, how about M50 capsules, too?

It’s free to dream…

Please keep us posted about single sided K87, too !
Also interested in regular k47 and k87 if the cardioid only is not there yet, but I am a bit lost about the waiting time, any info regarding this ?

no wait for regular k47, we're finally in actual production on k87 with proper tension and all, so about a month out on those. close enough that i've gotten shipping quotes and started shipping urgent orders by pulling off the line

Talking about capsules, would like to hear anyone's opinion on irregular capsule shapes (diaphragm/membrane), like the triangular in Ehrlund mics, or the squared in the top Audio Technica mics (5040,5047), etc. Of course I would be very curious in to know your opinion Ari, King korg, as a capsule maker and specialists too. Is this just mkt gimmick or are there real advantages. If so, why is anybody outside of those attempting similar concepts, even from China/ali suppliers, 797, 3U etc...?

Not a specialist by any means, just spending unreasonable amount of time trying to squeeze as much info as possible from any reliable source, condense, and save from loss. Experts are behind NDAs at Shure, Sennheiser, B&K...

Ideal microphone is just a point in space. Invisible. Next best thing is sphere, and then cylinder. Microphone body, and capsule distrupt sound wave field, and affect negatively the sound just by their presence. While other shapes in theory might have some other benefits, no one of the manufacturers mentions how they distrupt sound field. On the other hand I personally applaud any attempt to create something new and original.

The Swedish company Pearl (and later as well Milab) are often forgotten in these discussions. The founder of Pearl Rune Rosander invented a rectangular large diaphragm capsule in the 50's. The concept is to lower the self resonaces of the capsule. These capsules are still in production today and are some of the best you can find.

They use electronics to flatten the response though. Important to know for DIY, they can't be just dropped into a circuit. Great company, and great sounding mics.

They used to, Thomas corrected me on this one in the following posts.

This of course begs the question: How DO they sound just dropped into a circuit? (New thread if anyone actually knows?)

My DC-63 and VIP-60 are wonderful! Surprisingly dark.
