I don't completely understand the strategy of insulting large groups of voters that one doesn't agree with. This is generally considered a rookie mistake in politics.

I first perceived this from ex-President Obama who criticized small town voters in PA with "they cling to guns or religion". He went on to win despite the obvious mistake.

This would be the same Trump who at a press conference just yesterday called Andrew Cuomo the current governor of NY, and said things like:

First and foremost, I DO NOT care about global inflation. I care only about what’s causing it here in the US. How about the policy reversals that Trump put in place and Biden signed off on? The ones that caused us to stop being energy independent and a net exporter of oil. Time to stop living in denial. Executive orders Biden put in place which caused directly the highest inflation in 40 years. And you have the nerve to question people’s defense of Trump.
