The picture in post #16 appears to show some debris collected in the gap between the two backplanes. If that debris is conductive then perhaps when it is removed the isolation will be restored.

You absolutely need isolated backplates to get a figure 8 pattern with this circuit.
Soliloqueen sells a really nice k87 capsule

In the picture it appears the washers and connector ends of the two plate wires seem to be touching. Need a continuity check between plates with wires attached? Also is the diaphram shorted to the right plate?
Neverminding that the last activity in this thread was over a year ago, but as the picture in post #22 clearly shows, the shim between the two backplates is clearly brass, so the existence of electrical contact between them is beyond any shadow of a doubt.
PS: What's "diaphragm shorted to the right plate", and why should it be?
