analog vs digital

how about an  analog output with a digital driver, the best of both worlds,

Many many years ago I had an idea for a 'friendly clock'. It would be easy to implement these days with a micro and an LCD. It tells the time in words the way one human would tell another the time if asked. So, for example it would show, 'nearly ten past eight', or just gone a quarter to three' or 'exactly four o'clock' and so on.

Cheers

They exist!  http://www.timeanddate.com/wordclock/

Physical commercial ones are basic, accurate to five minutes or so, but there are some great DIY builds out there too.
