I've got the Topaz 32 & I've tried a LOT of chips in there

On the Summing Bus & Fader Boosters = OP275, 2604, 2134, LT1469CN8 + most versions of the 5532. The JRC's that are in there are VERY hard to beat!

The TI NE5532AN's are pretty good but maybe a little too lifeless for me... they are cleaner though. The Signetics NE5532AN are coming close to being my main pic on the Master bus & booster but I'm not sur yet. I just recieved some old orinal Signetics NE5532N (NO = A) & we'll see how that goes.

The LT1469CN8 is Very good also but maybe too clean also but I really like it.

On the channels, for me, OP275, 2604, 2134 were all OK but I chose to keep it stock - ST - TLO72's... the 2134 was always very exceptable everywhere.

I will be trying the LT chips on some channels when I have time.

Be carefull chanbing the Topaz TOO much, that board has a sound. I found myself going back closer to stock because the board is fat & punchy as is... maybe a little rolled off on the top but you can't have it all.

Good Luck

If you are looking to swap out the 8 jellybean TL071s, try the Burr-Brown OPA627 (OPA627AP). At $18/chip, this isn't a really cheap upgrade but these chips sound incredible. I have used them in headphone amps along with the Analog Devices AD843 (AD843JN) - $8.50. Both are available on Digikey in the U.S. The OPA132s were recommended in a previous post as an upgrade for the TL071 but Digikey only offers them in a dual package (2132). Even if you could find it, I would still go with the OPA627.

Ooops... Just looked at my topaz channel PCB and noticed they were TL072s so my previous post doesn't really fit into this. Try the AD8620 or the AD823 as definite upgrade replacements.

hi
hope this is inkeeping with this thread

ive got an mci636 loaded with
ne5532 and ne5534, there all old ti ones
i just put in some bb op627 in an eq on a channel
and was going to try op275 in the rest of it
but im not hearing that much of a change
maybe a smoother top when loads of eq is engaged?

the price on the njm5532dd and njm5534d seem really good
especially compared to the $25 a pop for the op627's

has anyone got anymore opinions on comparing the two types

thankyou

NJM5532L ... that beast simply ROCK !!!

SIP version, so not compatible to DIPs ...

I've ordered 25 pieces and each one was great.
Best noise-performance, best audio-performance for that price.

Cannot detect any audible difference to OPA2134 - so it's MY 100% choice!

Related to the different brands of 5532 I found something interesting at Dan Lavry's forum. I can't link the thread here because you need to be registered to read so I will quote him. This is a response to someone who exposed his opinion about variation in sound of different 5532/5534 brands.

There are many versions of the 5534 opamp. Some years ago I found the TI opamps to be faster then say Signetics, and there were other differences between brands. I never evaluated the JRC's...

Nothing I said states that all 5534's are the same. I never said that all components are the same quality. My point is that one can not evaluate a design by the components. A design is about the interaction between components and their characteristics and the circuit they "live in".

For example, I can show you a circuit where ALL the 5534's will work great. I can show you a circuit where none of them will do. Of course there are circuits where one "type" of 5534 will do better then another.

Speaking of differences between parts with the same generic name:
There are many times where the variation between OPamps is very large between production runs of the same manufacturer. That problem is much less pleasant. Once you chose a manufacturer, you are "not out of the woods", you still need to monitor it.
