Could this be interesting?
p03-vu04_9.jpg

I will have a couple of samples of this meters and if they work out good I will probably order 300 of them! ( 300 is minimum ) Think I can sell them for $4-5.00 USD each incl our ridiculous high VAT ( 25%)
I hope the scale is exchangeable!

Maybe i am wrong (but in this case i doubt it) but those meters looking 100% like the ones that behringer uses and quite some guys here (i am amongst them) use them in their SSL compressor clones.
I think they are quite good meters (and small enough to fit into a 1u rack case) and for $4-5 you can't do too much wrong.

Just found a pic of Frank's first SSL clone on his homepage with the behringer vu and it really seems to be the same

If it's them then yes you can exchange the scale. Just pop the case open and pull it out.

Well, do they have an internal diode bridge? Are they actually VUs? I didn't see any specs.. :?

If they do work fine, I'd say you could sell those 300 quite fast

hmmm.. Pultec lookalike, I'd say... Looks like the movement may be based on the same motor as the 'Behringer' model from the pics... if that were true, I'd never refer to it as a "clone"...

OH THANKS! I found this a long time ago and just lost the link... they have lots of options.

cheers!

i am 99.9% sure that is where (the nissei.com site) Jakob had sent me when i was looking for specs on the behringer meter (for me SSL clone) back in the TT days.

Yes, that is the Nissei one. You can get almost any of their meters with almost any sensitivity you like. The TN73 Sifam type meter is a pretty well-made copy, and goes at around US$12 at 100pcs, without internal rectifier, but with back mount bezel and light box. Fits cutout for AL-39 perfectly.

I just received a box of 100pcs.

I need 3 :green: :guinness:

And of course, there's always Calrad, if you want a cheap VU meter that acts somewhat like an actual VU meter. My "test report" is here: http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&safe=off&th=8951861b1f0134da&rnum=8

I m also in for 10. Just drop us an email when you post the "order thread" in the black market please.

If they are the Behringer meters then the scale is exchangable. You can also exchange the lamp to LEDs.
I'm in for 2 Sifam clones.
...I have a really hard time with calling these "Sifam clones"

-Having used dozens of brands of moving coil meter, -some good, some bad- Sifam have been without question the very best. The comparison would be to Rolls-Royce. Although I've only used one single type of Nissei meter (the Behringer model) it has been one of the cheapest, most nonlinear and least accurate of all the meters that I've used. I wouldn't compare it to one directly, but it's a lot closer to a Trabant than a Rolls Royce!

Jakob, I value your experience and opinion, I'm aware that these are affordable and that certainly counts for a lot, but can you give me your appraisal of the quality of this model?

The best brands of VU meter that I've used recently have been Sifam (Best-in-show!) Hoyt and Beede. The middle-quality meters are Modutec, Shinohara, micronta, Componex and Calrad. The bottom of the barrel has been Nissei and the low-price Modutec. I have a box of VUs of various brands at home that I used to compare ballistics and linearity.
