stick the booster inside the guitar cavity if you have room,  reduces noise,  1 less patch cord to trip on or go fizzy,
9 V batt is the biggest hog, use stereo jack for batt life,

jus stuck a velvet katana/zen drive inside the sg.  tone and vol pots became distortion, level and tone,
i bet Gus has some mods for that pedal,

now you can drive a 100 ft cord  and go outside the club to pick up a pizza from the delivery guy like Albert Collins or Guitar Slim.

had a 1 transistor booster inside the BC Rich Seagull back in 74, worked pretty good, came with the guitar.

speaking of blues guys, you wanna see something weird, check out BB at this mock hippy fest>

Like has been said, the easiest route is simply an opamp. But since we're this certain kind of people here,  we like the Rube Goldberg approach better on times.

For completeness, one of the several possible circuits:

(also check out those Jensen application notes)

If put inside the instrument, do address the mentioned capacitive loading (add!), otherwise things start to sound unnatural.
(And realize your guitar/bass has become what is commonly called an 'active' instrument, so you've lost any remaining street credibility  8) )
