so these days, I have been doing pcb's with Kicad. it works fairly well.
I was given some gerbers generated with proteus for a project. They all end in .txt
I can open them up in just about any online viewer and see the PCB and how it should be.
I can even upload them to inexpensive board house and see what they would look like and order them.
I am wondering if there is a way to import these back in Kicad for tweaking. Mainly I want to make the board smaller and change it to be SMT
It's mainly an academic venture and if necessary I can redraw the schematic and boards in Kicad but I am wondering if there is a way to do it. Every attempt so far has yielded an error.

Super roundabout and wicked annoying but in Eagle, I’ve done a thing where I was able to generate various .dxf files (drills, outline, screen print, copper layer) out of a very old set of gerber files and was basically able to use that as a visual template for a recreated layout. I had to re draw the schematic from scratch, obviously.

However, this was a small layout. For anything medium to large, this “technique” would be a pain in the ass.

That being said, I know KiCAD is better than Eagle so maybe it can handle this sort of thing better. I’m stuck on Eagle because I don’t have time to learn new software…
