Pete's panels properly rock!

I have a 2254 panel made by him and it's unbelievably good.

OK, so here's my bit then.. :)

If you wannt the panels/cases that I'll be doing, you can order them here http://www.groupdiy.com/index.php?topic=35422.msg500579#msg500579 , no discussions necessary, lol ;)

I don't think a 2U design's the best way to go, you'd use up 4U of rack space for 2 channels, whereas with a dedicated 1U stereo preamp and 2x 1084EQs you'd only use up 3U; plus, I can't really think of a design concept for a 2U pre+EQ that I'd like, given that the dimensions for the EQ are already set. Well, why not, but Pete's probably the man for this then.

Thanks,
Dan

The concept was to make a line level only 1084 EQ. The option is there for the mike preamp but it comes at the price of needing more room (therefore a 2RU). But for those that will build the mike pre they will have to go with another case than Dan's.

Dan has been working with me on the (actually its his work!) case for a long time. Its beautifully built and finish on the front panel is tough as nails. I don't want to get into a political battle as to who should make what but I would go with Dan for the 1RU. The pictures you see are all his case and front panel.

Cheers

Jim

but you know what? I think you do NEED some 1084s  ;)

Ha ha haaa nice one mate ;) I'd be up for one!

We stock the transformers, inductors and Grayhills anyway.... I'll create a "kit" with a single part number for ease of ordering...... if Jim emails me a BOM I'll look at adding the electrolytics, wimas and transistors as well (but not resistors unless there is an unusual value like 4M7).

This looks like a great project. Any news on a kit, Colin? Checked the site but didn't find anything. Also, any guesses on the cost of the final build, anyone? I'd love to order a pair but the lack of info on the final product has kept me sitting on the fence for quite a while. Thanks.

Hi Ralph,

I'll let Colin talk about the kits but here is link:
http://www.audiomaintenance.com/acatalog/kits.html

TAW also has the capacitor kit.

The cost of parts, case should be between $400 & $500.

Buying a new production 1084 is over $4,200.00 (includes mike pre). So I think its insanely worth it (but I'm not the one to ask).

If you have any questions let me know. I know I'm not very good at hyping things usually but I think this unit does not need the hype, it does sound wonderful.

Cheers

oh, whoops, LOL.

So, that means your EZ1084EQ & a Pre73 should be pretty similar to a 1084 with a preamp?

I presume by Pre73 you mean the Golden Age one. You will get the same sound up to a point, reason being that you add an extra XFR in the path as well as extra amplification that is not there on original.
If you are careful with your gain staging it should sound fine. Just expect a little more of that British iron sound (or Chinese iron? Not sure what Golden Age uses).

If you want the same thing as a 1084 with mike preamp I suggest you use the EZ1290LE from Madriaanse. I have the board but have not tested it yet (I need to get the Grayhill and some other parts.). It essentially ads the missing part you need to add a mike pre section of the 1084.

Cheers

Jim
