I finally got around to getting a hot air station recently. I've watched a bunch of tutorials and practiced on some old junk pc cards. The first "real" project I have is to replace some 8-pin soic chips, so nothing too difficult. One thing I haven't found a consistent answer to in the tutorials is the proper temp to use, both for desoldering and melting the new paste. I've seen anywhere from 350 C to 420 C used. Seems like hotter for less time would be better, but is that correct?

I think mine is set higher than that (480'?), but when doing rework I just heat the board/parts long enough to release the part (grabbed with a tweezer), or when reflowing you can see when the solder past melts and part shifts so you don't over heat stuff...

Not the best time of the year for hot air work...

I am in the same boat.  I will break out the station and hit some dead MI boards for practice if things get slow in the summer.  I am planning on using an adjustable Weller with a flat tip to do my re-soldering though.  Not sure of temp.  I was going to get that by working on the practice boards.
My first serious project will be to evict some TLO74's and caps from an Oram Bleccch 24 and replace with modern quads and jumpers.
