When it comes to guitar amps I like 6v6 and el84 equally and more than larger power tubes. I like a LOT of sag from a tube rectifier (which I realize is not in the cards on this project), a single gain stage preamp, push pull output, little or no negative feedback, and no eq, or just a bright switch.
I figure if you're going to build something, it may as well be something that you can't get easily from an off the shelf amp. This type of design should give you a lot of touch response and not a lot of headroom. It may be a bit noisy.
