Hi all,

Well i got my 99v pre up and running without any hassles (a miracle for me as i seem to be good at breaking things), with a lundhal 1538 in, and no tranny out. I've built an external box for the power supply, so i can fit 4 of these pre's into 1ru.

Now what can i say...............I now undestand audio lust!! This thing is awesome!! smooth, clear, beautiful!! My crappy ibanez acoustic through my cheapo rode nt2, sounded like i've never heard it before.

All the pre's i've used before are studio projects and joe meeks, and the odd yamaha desk going into a M-audio Delta 1010lt, so you can imagine the difference with the 99v and my new Mytek stereo96 AD (bought a couple of months ago). from poo to pro!!

I'm no pro, and my ears need a lot a practice but i like what i hear!!!
:thumb:
So a big thanks to everyone who answered my preamp questions and especially joe for making the thing!!

Steve

Basically, choose a discrete op-amp, (Forsell, Hardy, Jensen, quad8, NTP, API, Melcor, Studer, Massenberg, Sontec, JLM, etc, and a mic transformer ( Mairnair, Carnhill, Sowter, Belclere/Willesden, Jensen, Cinemag, JLM, Whatever, and YOU CAN'T REALLY GO WRONG! Some combinations are slightly better than others for particular applications, but all will KILL any current "magazine flava ov da munf" . . . .
that's my humble and honest (and experienced) opinion, for what it's worth . . .

Nice job, so let's see the pix?

I did a variation on this a few months ago, Luhndahl into a Forsell amp, which sounds stunning. I need to add a pad switch, though. Here's mine:

I'll see if i can borrow my flatmates digital camera. Is there a place that you can put your photo's on the web? I only have access to the net at work, but i'm sure i can get some pics up. :green:

Thanks Steve for the fine review of the 99v pre

Send any photo's you want hosted of the 99v pre to me by email and I will host them and send you the link info back by email.

That goes for anyone else with 99v or JLM99*MB PCB or basically anything that has a bit of JLM in the photo.

Cheers Joe,

I'll try the photobucket thing, but i'll send you the pics too if you want to use them anywhere.

Everyone is gonna see my shocking metalwork and wiring.. ha ha

hopefully i'll have them by tomorrow

regards

Steve

O.K everyone,

I've got some photo's of my 99v pre if you're keen to check it out.

I'm planning on painting the front panel black, and i have some cream, bone coloured knobs on the way, and i will do all the lettering in the same colour as the knobs.

I haven't secured the toroid down yet, but i'm only using it my bedroom at the mo, so it's kinda slipped down my "to do" list.

anyways, have a geez if you like.

Hey
Great work, my jlm99's are coming along i just hope they look that good. As a matter of interest what value resistors did you use for r15 and r22 with the lundahl and wat ratio did you set the input transfomer?
Nice work!

alo steve
nice,very good.
seems you`re missing a connection inthe pot`s terminals,if memory serves me well.look at the schem.
your 99v it`s just **** the one i did.get ready to another level of recording.bet he`ll soon have a brother.
best regards
pedro

Hi Pedro,

That photo is a little misleading. It does look like I haven't connected one of the terminals, but it's just that it's a black wire and it doesn't seem to show up very well in the pic. Had me worried there for a moment

I agree on the "another level of recording" too. I just keep listening to a couple of acoustic guitar tracks, that i re-recorded over the weekend, and compared to the first recordings, it's a huge difference!!!

A family of 4 of these pre's would be insane!!

Vikki, I'll check on those resistors after work for you. As for the ratio, I just followed the .gif file in black in white on joes website. From memory it's running the same way as the writing on the op-amps. Can't remember what the ratio is, but it's got stacks of gain. :thumb:

Yeh I am very pleased with my setup also (JLM input tranny and Fred's 992's) and I probably will do two more channels plus 2 of the 1290 Micro.
Anyone had a go at these yet ?

Joe I wonder if you have a sticker that's small and I could put on the front of the unit I would love to have a "powered by JLM audio" or the like on the front as I get a lot of questons about it.

Steve,

Looks like it works better than mine does! (mine is still in pieces, though!) Seems like you are working too hard for those 24mm holes for the Neutriks. Do yourself a favor and get one of the QMax punches. They are cheep and work quite well.

I see you used the Lundahl 1538. Nice Job!
Charlie
