How about we elect competent Presidents with character and integrity that nominate well-qualified, unbiased judges without skeletons in the closet?
That is obviously an ideal situation, but in the real world does it matter?

FDR did not have a perfect past but he got the New Deal through.

JFK shagged his way through his presidency but it didn't stop him saving the world from nuclear disaster in 62.

Clinton got a BJ in the oval office, but he was a very empathetic president nevertheless.

Trump is a loud mouth who makes unnecessary trouble for himself , but he is tackling many issues that have long been considered too hot to handle by other presidents.  He is also up for a Nobel Peace prize for making peace with NK, in case you hadn't noticed.

Obama got the peace prize just for being elected, which must have been embarrassing for him to be honest.

I learned the lesson from history, that the right things can still get done by imperfect people.  Many people reform themselves and become older and wiser as they mature.  If we all stayed as dumb and insensitive as we were as kids, the world would be like the "Lord of the Flies".

True, and I detest the idea that only the most boring and conforming people get to the top.

But in the case of Kavenaugh "the right thing" would be cementing the rule of money, the power of the current aristocracy, of older and whiter people vs. the rest and that of religious extremists.

An unsustainable future that would lead to even more instability than is already there. Nobody in their right mind could actually want that. But a lot of people aren't thinking with their brains.

No. There's no peace, and no award.

Someone actually deserving won it.

I don't think that Obama thought he deserved his.

I hope he didn't.

But, you must have missed the Nobel announcements.
Two people who deserved the award won:

McLean's name first came up when an ex-boyfriend of Ford submitted a letter to the Senate Judiciary Committee stating that he personally witnessed Ford coaching McLean on how to handle a lie detector test, contradicting her claim under oath that she had never participated in or helped anyone with a lie detector test.

Whew, it's fortunate that you taught us in this thread that we can safely discard what someone says happened to them so long as someone else says the opposite.

Well, lest we get too nostalgic in our quest for unvarnished truth, disinformation is now (and maybe always was) the backbone of infosec. It shouldn't be a surprise to anyone where conflicting information is being promulgated, there's something within the tangle of yarn.

Edit: But to relax public opinion, let's not imagine a sitting judge in our highest court double teaming sorority girls with his elite private school fraternity bro's. It was all merely a drinking game. /fistbump /wink

China?

====
in case there's curiosity where the administration stands on China...
This is far more interesting (to me) than the Kananaugh scrum... I expect some disappointed people throwing temper tantrums today (sorry).
------
China is in the middle of a heated negotiation about open and free trade.  For years they have received special developing nation status to encourage them to participate fairly in world trade, but now is time to level the playing field.

China is now undeniably a world power and playing odd man out with us and Russia. Up until recently the trade negotiation was relatively compartmentalized and didn't spill over into military, but recently China has starting working those levers too (joint military exercises with Russia, aggression in South China sea, etc), and trying to take advantage of the mid term election to apply political pressure on US states with targeted trade moves.

I can't predict the future but the massive size of China's exports to us vs. the smaller amount we sell to them, suggests they can't possibly win a tit for tat, tariff sanctions escalation. That said China's leader for life doesn't have to worry about election cycles, but he still must keep his people happy enough to not depose him.

I believe President Trump has a good relationship with President Xi because they are both working in the interest of their respective countries and both fully understand that.  I expect this will end in a negotiated settlement, but surely well after Nov. It could take even longer because China needs to save face and can't look like they are capitulating to President Trump.

An interesting (to me) tidbit is that China is currently selling billions of US dollar denominated bonds to raise money. The Chinese economy is slowing and IMO can't wait too long to settle the trade dispute and get their domestic economy growing again, but China is China and will do things in their own time.

In general the news is trying to make things look worse than they are (the sky is falling, watch/read now), but I have written about China expanding their military influence in the South China Sea for some time. They even turned an atoll into a man made island for a military installation there expanding their territorial claims.

This is to scare/influence countries like Viet Nam and others in the immediate vicinity.

China was disinvited from RIMPAC this year (a military exercise with 25 nations in the region) because of their increasing military encroachment and designs on the area.

I'm incredibly sad for America tonight.  Putting everything to do with the accusation against Kavanaugh aside his behavior during the hearings was brazenly partisan and unbalanced, he is not fit for the office he now holds.

I understand your feelings Ruairi, but his reaction is understandable if he believed the Democrats orchestrated the whole thing to ruin his career and reputation.  Not many people will have the grace to accept that when it affects their own family.

At its core law is a matter of logic and reason.  Being too emotional, even if understandable,  is the opposite of what you want for an impartial decider of law.

The specific allegations aside, Democracy itself again took a big hit.

The current holders of power don't believe in a "government of the people, by the people, for the people". They don't believe in "Equal justice under law".  They don't actually belive "all men are equal" and possess "inalienable rights".

They believe in power. They believe in greed. They believe in one set of rules for them and another for the rest. They are the grave diggers of the American Dream.

Dark times ahead. I hope we can overcome.

This is exactly my thought
