Greetings. We have had one of these for about a decade that came pre built from someone, no idea who or what. They used good parts, though, and it has the little DIY EL panel rather than a vactrol or something.

I recently hooked it up and started using it regularly after unsuccessfully trying to sell it for a while.

I calibrated it and it is behaving just fine, but I will say from experience recording and mixing with real vintage LA-3A’s (and even the UA plugins…), this one just doesn’t have the same kind of “vibe” to it. It sounds good, just a little slow and sort of “boring” if anything.

Sifted through this big thread but wondering if there were any circuit fixes / improvements made to this project back in the day.

Again, I don’t think there is necessarily anything functionally wrong with the unit. It just doesn’t sound as good as other LA3A’s!

Can’t really offer much help Z, but what about getting it on an extender cable and wiring in a standard TB4 (if you can get your hands on one) to see if that improves things as a process of elimination

Good call and easy solution to at least see if it sounds better. We have a few units loaded with nice Kenetek’s I can pull and I have plenty of octal sockets sitting around… could always just make it take up two 500 rack spaces lol.
